BILDERBACK BAGS BONUSES, BELDOWSKI SWEEPS AWAY THE COMPETITION

By: Kip Ripley

A solid crowd turned out Saturday night at Rockford Speedway and were greeted with outstanding weather and a thrilling night of short track racing.

Side-by-side action and close finishes were the name of the game on this night, with each feature race providing its own unique sort of drama.

STANLEY STEEMER NASCAR LATE MODELS

Two-time and reigning NASCAR Late Model track champion Michael Bilderback returned to action on Saturday evening and made his presence known. After qualifying second, Bilderback accepted the $400 Gerber Collision and Glass Ultimate Challenge and was slotted in the 11th and final starting spot in the 30 lap Late Model main event. When the dust settled, it was Bilderback standing tall in victory lane with his fifteenth feature win since 2015 after taking the lead late in the race following a thrilling duel with ‘Driver X’ Jon Reynolds Jr.

Dennis Smith Jr paced the field early, taking the early lead from polesitter Jeff Wakeman. As Smith slipped out to the early advantage, the rest of the field began to wage war. The first yellow flag flew on lap 7, bringing the balance of the field back to Smith’s bumper. Five laps after the initial restart, Reynolds swung into the lead and by the race’s halfway point, Bilderback was in second place.

The final yellow of the race flew on lap 17 and set the stage for the epic finish, which not only included Reynolds and Bilderback but also Alex Papini, in pursuit of his third straight win. On the restart, Reynolds was able to give himself a small yet short lived cushion. Bilderback soon chased down the leader and over the course of the final ten laps, the two racers put on a terrific side-by-side race with Papini right on their bumpers.

With three laps remaining, Bilderback was able to nose ahead for the lead, taking the top spot for himself with two laps to go. When the checkered flag flew, it was Bilderback beating Reynolds to the line by two carlengths. Bilderback not only claimed the $400 Ultimate Challenge Bonus, but also an additional $100 bonus courtesy of L&B Coin and Collectables.

Reynolds and Papini both continued their solid starts to the year. Reynolds started the race eighth and finished second for a second straight week, while Papini went from seventh to third and also was the evening’s fast qualifier. Smith came home in fourth for a second straight week while Jake Gille rounded out the top five.

MILLER LITE AMERICAN SHORT TRACKERS

Franc Beldowski finished of an impressive night on an impressive note, sweeping the evening in the Miller Lite American Short Tracker division thanks in part to a last lap, last corner pass for the win.

Beldowski started the evening by claiming his second fast qualifier award of the year and then won the CoLin Metals Fast Dash. Beldowski would later go on to win his heat race, setting himself up for the clean sweep and a possible $100 bonus from Rosebud Transportation if he could complete the sweep.

Beldowski’s quest for the broom would not be easy, starting the race from the eighth spot while also trying to contest with last week’s feature winner Aaron Rude. Rude, who started ninth, got to the front first, passing Destiny Genore for the lead on lap seven. As the race neared halfway, Beldowski found the front and began to challenge Rude for the lead. Things got serious in the last five laps of the race, when the drivers swapped the lead officially three times in five laps and unofficially once every corner. Rude led by a bumper at the white flag, but pushed his Ford Pinto just a little too high in the first and second corner, giving Beldowski a glimmer of hope. The two drivers raced through turns three and four with Beldowski taking the lead and the win at the finish line by half a car length.

The victory was Beldowski’s second of the season, while Rude turned in a second straight solid finish after a rough opening night. Todd Snow was the big winner late in the race, using the final restart to move himself from eighth to third. The third place finish was Snow’s best career result in the Short Tracker division. Genore, a Rookie of the Year contender, ended the race a solid fourth place, while Steve Dickson rounded out the top five.

KICKSTART ROADRUNNERS

Chad Lounsbury threw the monkey off his back in emphatic fashion, winning the caution-free 20 lap Roadrunner feature by over a straightaway. While Lounsbury sailed off into the night, wild battles raged for second and fourth. Nick Schneider held off a furious charge from Opening Night winner Arlyn Roush to claim second place, while Roush settled for third. Justin Wagner had to withstand a three-wide tussle for fourth position, holding off Kevin Memoli and Robby Robinson.

ILLINI RACING SERIES MIDGETS

Joliet’s Scott Koerner led flag-to-flag in the 15 lap Midget feature while holding off a persistent challenge from Tom Eyman in route to the win. Eyman settled for second while Doug Orseske claimed third.

SATURDAY NIGHT’S COLD WEATHER LEADS TO HOT RACING

By: Kip Ripley

As far as the climate was concerned, it was a frigid night at Rockford Speedway.

As for the action on the track, Saturday night was one of the hottest in recent memory.

Each feature event provided its own special brand of excitement, with side-by-side racing and late race drama the name of the game.

STANLEY STEEMER NASCAR LATE MODELS

2013 Rockford Speedway Track Champion Alex Papini has made his presence known early in 2018. The Rockford resident is now 2-for-2 in the Late Model division following a frantic final 8 laps of the division’s 30 lap feature.

Papini worked his way into the top three during the first 22 laps of caution-free racing. But while the two-time NASCAR State Champion made his way forward, as many as six other drivers in the twelve car starting field were making their push to challenge for the win, resulting in a full-fledged Battle Royal for the top positions.

The only caution flag of the race flew on lap 22 for Jeff Wakeman’s spun vehicle, which set up the push to the finish. Right before the yellow flag, teenager Max Kahler moved past Dennis Smith Jr to inherit the race lead. With Kahler and Smith occupying the top two spots, Papini and 2014 Track Champion Jon Reynolds Jr lined up behind them for the ensuing restart. Papini was quick to get by Smith and Reynolds soon followed. Papini then set his sights on Kahler and the duo wrestled for the top spot for the final six circuits. Coming to the white flag, Papini nosed ahead of Kahler at the line to take the lead and finished the job in turn two. The final scrape for the lead sent Kahler up the banking and opened the door for Reynolds to slip into second place.

Papini hit the line in first, with Reynolds taking home runner-up honors. Kahler settled for third, his second straight top-three finish to start the season. Smith ended up in fourth while Matt Berger rounded out the top five.

The race saw five different leaders in just 30 short laps while Papini and Reynolds charged from their 10th and 9th starting positions to take the top two positions.

BARGAIN HUNTER SPORTSMAN

The Bargain Hunter Sportsman feature saw early fireworks, followed by a race-long struggle for the win.

Terrance Robinson and Howie Ware battled hard for the lead in the race’s first six laps, before trading blows and eventually bringing out the race’s first and only yellow flag. The incident gave the lead to third-year Sportsman racer Cody Houseweart, who had the duty of holding off a small yet mighty field of challengers. Houseweart’s main challenge came from Johnny Robinson II, who eventually ripped the lead away from Houseweart on lap 12. After initially stepping out to a steady lead, Robinson heard the footsteps of Houseweart again in the race’s final five laps. Robinson held off his challenger’s late advances to capture the win, his first of the season. Houseweart finished a distant second, with 2017 Track Champion Chad Smith third. Rookie Sportsman racer Richie Schinderling placed fourth while Ware returned to action and soldiered to a fifth place finish.

MILLER LITE AMERICAN SHORT TRACKERS

Aaron Rude and his ‘Fabulous Ford Pinto’ outran opening night winner Franc Beldowski to claim victory in the 25 lap main event for the Short Trackers. Rude, who started in eighth position, got to the front on lap 10 and led the rest of the way. A mid-race yellow flag aided Beldowski, who was stuck in traffic early and fell back to eighth place. Beldowski’s furious charge came up just short though with a second place result.

Rookie Destiny Genore turned in an impressive effort which resulted in a third place finish. Todd Snow led the race’s first nine laps and finished in fourth place, while David Russel rounded out the top five.

KICKSTART ROADRUNNERS

Austin Fowler and Nick Schneider traded the lead and traded paint for most of the 20 lap Kickstart Roadrunner feature with Fowler eventually coming out on top in the tussle. Officially the duo traded the lead four times in twelve laps before Fowler claimed the top spot for good on the 16th circuit.

Schneider came across the line in second right behind Fowler, with Brett Garnhardt finishing a solid third. Justin Wagner collected fourth while Robby Robinson rounded out the top five.

Devin Opsahl won the Roadrunner Challenge ‘Forward/Backward Race.’

ORR SCORES WXRX 200 VICTORY

By: Kip Ripley

South Milwaukee Wisconsin’s Jay Orr commanded the second half of Sunday afternoon’s WXRX 200 lap Enduro, leading the final 96 laps in route to his second career win in the event.

Orr bested 85 entrants on a sun-splashed afternoon, inheriting the lead right after the race’s halfway point. Palatine’s Ryan Decker directed the race for most of the first 100 laps, before finding trouble near lap 75. Nursing a bent up and overheating race car, Decker’s chances for victory evaporated as the cars headed to the pits during the 10-minute halfway break, when he was unable to return to action.

Former race winners Caleb Shultis and Tyler Griswold finished second and third. Griswold took third by a matter of a few feet over fourth place finishing Ryan Lagastee. Scott Vetter rounded out the top five.

Papini, Beldowski, Cartwright, Roush & Schmidt Pop Tops on 71st Rockford Speedway Season!

By JD – As many outdoor events and sporting contests of all extremes in the Midwest and other parts of the country suffered chilled out conditions of recent; Rockford Speedway held its 71st Season Opener, presented by Mountain Dew, on Saturday April 21st, 2018. Hearty fans, thirsty for excitement, sampled what is to put everyone on the edge of their seat all year. The Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models, Miller Lite American Short Trackers, Bargain Hunter Sportsmen, T.E.D. Transit Bandits and the Kickstart Roadrunners divisions offered their first showing of the year; with Alex Papini, Franc Beldowski, Adam Cartwright, Nick Schmidt and Arlyn Roush; respectively, all tasting Victory Lane.

The Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models’ feature got off to a frigid start. Polesitter Tom Gille, whose take-off had been called back on the initial green, asserted his command of the lead headed down the back-straight on the next attempt. In a game of inches, Tom used all of his from the lower lane, and outside starter Jacob Vanoskey had none to give from the preferred higher lane. Headed into turn three, Vonoskey suffered the loss of this battle of imperfection, veering into the notorious pit-entrance “point”. Guarded by an absorbing implement tire; Jacob’s car bounced off it and into the air before a hard landing, but thankfully he exited the car on his own power. Having moved up to the outside front-row, DJ Smith crossed the line first as the event finally took a lasting green flag and the first laps were consumed. As Tom Gille’s run fizzed out, Papini moved up from sixth starting spot and made the initial challenge to Smith on the seventh lap. By the next go-around, Papini showed himself as the best case on the night, pulling away from the field. Quick qualifier Jon Reynolds, Jr., from eighth on the grid, sipped at Smith’s second spot until five laps to go. Reynolds and 2017 Rookie of the Year winner Max Kahler dropped Smith back to fourth; as melee ensued. Continued contact was made, with Smith and third starting Jake Gille ending up against the turn three wall. Gille took the hardest hit and Smith went to the back of the running field. With no challenges over the last four lap “shoot-out”; Papini staked his claim as king of the hill at the end of 30 laps. Kahler recorded a solid second, with Reynolds ending his run as the final spot on the podium. Matt Lundberg quietly cashed the fourth place check and 2017 series runner-up Matt Berger recovered from a less than auspicious evening start to compete the top five.

2018 main event action had kicked off with the highly modified 4-cylinder American Short Trackers division, populated with an ingredient mixture of mostly Mustang bodied rear-wheel drives, but with a healthy dose of front-wheel drive cars competing as well. A turn three collision on lap one resulted in number one from time trials, Franc Beldowski having to restart from the back, while “fast” heat winner Aaron Rude’s Pinto got hauled into the pits. Todd Snow, having a career night, then poured it on from the first spot and held off a charging David Russell. Meanwhile, Beldowski surged through the field, at the half-way point completing an extreme lower groove overtake of both Russell and then Snow. Beldowski went on to bottle up a solid victory over Russell. 2017 Winged Woman on Wheels Champion Destiny Genore passed Snow late for third, the highest finish for a front-wheel drive, of the cool evening. Shannon Stoltz counted in the fifth spot.

Cartwright led all 25 laps in the Bargain Hunter Sportsmen main; but his green to checkered gulp on the top spot was packed with intensity. A lap two spin by fast qualifier Howie Ware, reset the field early. Cartwright, a former Roadrunner Champion and declared rookie to this next level V-8 class, was chased by second starting Cody Houseweart through-out. From the race’s mid-point, Houseweart got as close as one car length away. John Featherstone, who also moved up from the Roadrunner class, then spun with three laps to go and the field was re-set. Ware managed his way by Houseweart after the restart and took the bridesmaid spot, as Houseweart faded to second runner-up. Johnny Robinson, II claimed fourth, ahead of younger brother Terrance Robinson in the fifth position.

The T.E.D. Transit Bandits, race prepped front wheel drive entry level 4-cylinders, never disappoint with a full flavored feature. Mark Bielefeldt shot out as the early front-runner, before his night went stale and Nick Schmidt then held command over the majority of the remaining battle. Defending Champion (the only driver from all divisions, competing in the same class, on this season’s opening night) Kelsey Dobbs and Bart Brockmann moved up through the roster to put up challenges, but suffered fates that didn’t allow for a finish. Dan Schmeissing, Kyle Roster, Scott Gagen, and Chris Mihalski (all some of the most far traveled of the evening’s racers) took the top five spots in the end.

Outside front-row starting Roush was in control from the Kickstart Roadrunners flag drop, the final act of the night. Fifth starting Chad Lounsbury kept Roush honest over the half-way point of the “entry-level” V-8 contest. With seven laps to go, fluid debris on the back-straight resulted in the event’s only yellow. It was much of the same over the final circuits, however with Lounsbury packing some citrus punches underneath, while Roush maintained the high lane and top spot at the peak of the pack. Contact was made late, coming out of turn four, but it was Roush holding the trophy in Victory Lane. Officially, Kevin Memoli was awarded second, after a late race pass. Robby Robinson and Austin Fowler, climbed up from the back of the pack to take the third and fourth spots. Brent Garnhart survived an edgy campaign to record fifth.

Saturday April 28 is “The Mane Event,” with four divisions of racing and the first-ever Best Beard & Best Mullet Contests lined up. Fans of all different sorts of grooming techniques are invited to sign up for the contests in the Miller Lite Pavilion once they arrive next Saturday night, with the contest being held on the track at Intermission. The racing menu includes the Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models, Bargain Hunter Sportsman, Miller Lite American Short Trackers and Kickstart Roadrunners along with the Roadrunner Challenge ‘Forward/Backward Race!’ Gates open at 5 PM next Saturday night, with Qualifying at 5:55 PM and racing slated for 7:07 PM. Perhaps more drivers, teams, and hopefully spectators, from areas with tracks yet to open in 2018, will continue their racing fix at the Rockford Speedway! All the fields remain wide-open with a host of drivers hopeful to come up as the season favorites.

Then, on Sunday afternoon April 29, the rescheduled WXRX 200 takes center stage. The race, which usually sees anywhere from 70-110 cars competing, will test the mettle of drivers from at least five states in a door-to-door war with all eyes on the prize. Rockford Enduro racers are also gunning for the ‘Ironman Challenge Bonus,’ awarded to the driver who finishes the most laps in all three scheduled races this year (next Sunday’s WXRX 200, June’s Town Fair 200 and October’s Goblin 250). Pit Gates open at 9 AM Sunday, with Grandstands opening at 11 AM and the WXRX 200 beginning at 1 PM.

Adult admission for both events is $12, Children (ages 6-11) are $6 and Kids ages 5 and under are admitted FREE.
