2018 SPRING CLASSIC OFFICIALLY CANCELLED

After last weekend’s postponement and with no viable option in sight for a reschedule date, the 2018 Spring Classic at Rockford Speedway has officially been cancelled.

The cancellation marks just the third in 41 years that Spring Classic has been shelved, joining the 2014 and 2009 versions of the event, both bagged by subpar weather conditions.

The occasion also marks just the fifth time since 2004 (107 events) that a Big 8 Late Model Series event has been cancelled.

The 2018 Big 8 Late Model Series now becomes a seven race chase, as the season opens Friday night June 1 at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids Iowa with ‘Clash at the Downs IV.’

Rockford Speedway is set to finally open it’s gates for a 71st season this Saturday night April 21 with the Mountain Dew Season Opener, featuring the Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models, Bargain Hunter Sportsman, Miller Lite American Short Trackers, TED Transit Bandits & Kickstart Roadrunners. Race time is set for 7:07 PM this Saturday night.

IMPENDING WET AND COLD WEEKEND POSTPONES 2018 SPRING CLASSIC

The coldest start to the month of April in recorded history has claimed its fair share of victims as far as outdoor events are concerned in the upper Midwest this year.

Despite the brief tease of warm temperatures over the last couple days, miserable “spring” conditions are set to return this weekend. With that in mind, officials at Rockford Speedway have decided to postpone the 41st Annual Spring Classic originally slated for this Sunday afternoon April 15.

Both Rockford Speedway and Big 8 Series officials are working to find a suitable reschedule date for the event.

**REMINDER: WXRX 200 POSTPONED UNTIL APRIL 29**

A reminder that even though the sun is out this morning, the unseasonably frigid temperatures have postponed today’s WXRX 200 Enduro until Sunday April 29 at 1 PM.

Sunrise temperatures this morning were at 15 degrees with Wind Chills hovering around zero degrees. Temperatures are not forecast to get about 32 degrees until after 3 PM today.

With that being said, the Pre Entry date has been moved to April 24 at 11:59 PM for the WXRX 200. Post entries will be accepted from April 25 until 11:45 AM on Sunday April 29.

Pricing and times will remain the same for April 29, with Pit Gates & Inspection opening at 9 AM, while Spectator gates open at 11 AM. The WXRX 200 takes the green at 1 PM Sunday April 29. FEBRUARY-LIKE WEATHER POSTPONES WXRX 200 UNTIL APRIL 29

By: Clem Easterly

Racing at Rockford Speedway and apparently Spring itself will have to wait at least one more week.

With February-like temperatures and conditions plaguing not only the Midwest but much of the eastern half of the United States, officials at Rockford Speedway have made the decision to postpone the WXRX 200 until Sunday afternoon April 29 at 1 PM.

Chilly and winter-like conditions have frustrated many recently who are ready to move into the Spring season and this week has proven that winter still has one last punch left. As much as two inches of snow is slated to fall on the Rockford area between Friday and late Sunday night. That, coupled with Saturday morning temperatures in the teens and midday highs forecast to reach only the mid-to-upper 30’s drove officials to the decision to postpone the WXRX 200 from it’s originally scheduled date this Saturday April 7.

“Low temperatures and winter-like conditions will make things uncomfortable for fans and drivers alike, while the possibility for more wintery precipitation gives us the prospect of a very tough week of clean up next week as we prepare for Spring Classic,’ said Speedway General Manager David Deery. ‘As much as we hate to throw out hands up to the weather, we also want to do what’s best for all involved and having another date open at hopefully a warmer time makes this call slightly easier.”

“It feels more like it’s almost January 7 instead of April 7,” Deery noted.

Pricing and times will remain the same for April 29, with Pit Gates & Inspection opening at 9 AM, while Spectator gates open at 11 AM. The WXRX 200 takes the green at 1 PM Sunday April 29. Adult admission is $12, with Children (ages 6-11) $6 and Kids 5 and under FREE.

The season now kicks off next Sunday April 15 with the 41st Annual Spring Classic, featuring the Big 8 Late Model Series, Mid-American Stock Car Series and American Super Cup Series. Main Gates open at 11 AM next weekend with LPT ‘Faster Than A Speeding Bullet’ Qualifying at 11:30 AM and racing at 1 PM. Adult admission for Spring Classic is $20, with children (ages 6-11) $10 and Kids 5 and under FREE.
