RECAP: AUGUST 5 KAR KORNER WORLD FAMOUS FIGURE 8 TRAILER RACE NIGHT

By: Eric Huenefeld

A near-capacity crowd filled Rockford Speedway Saturday night as part of Kar Korner World Famous Figure 8 Trailer Race Night. Along with the demolition extravaganza at the end of the evening, the thousands in attendance were also treated to a terrific night of short track racing under the lights on a perfect summer evening.

STANLEY STEEMER NASCAR LATE MODELS

For the fourth time this season and for the third time in four races, Michael Bilderback parked his red #2 car in Victory Lane, winning the 30 lap Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Model feature race. Bilderback, who started the race in the sixth position, took the lead on the eleventh lap from outside pole sitter Dennis Smith Jr and never looked back. With the win, Bilderback also increased his lead in the championship standings to 50 points over Matt Berger. Jon Reynolds Jr had the drive of the night, charging from his ninth starting spot to a solid runner up, while Mitch Garfield rounded out the top three. Three-time track champion Jerry Gille settled for fourth place after a race-long battle with Garfield for third while former track champion Jake Gille made his first appearance of 2017 and came home with a fifth place finish.

BARGAIN HUNTER SPORTSMAN

Machesney Park’s Cody Houseweart captured the biggest win of his racing career Saturday night, holding off several challenges from multiple contenders on his way to the checkers in the 25 lap main event for the Bargain Hunter Sportsman division. After starting the race in second place, Houseweart soon found pressure from behind in the form of two-time feature winner Johnny Robinson II. As the race unfolded, Robinson took several peeks below Houseweart for the race lead. In the final laps, Robinson pushed his car further and further below Houseweart, before Robinson eventually lost control entering turn one, spinning out and bringing out the yellow flag with just a handful of laps to go. On the restart, it was point leader Chad Smith who was lined up behind Houseweart for the chase to the checkers, with Smith not able to get close enough to rip victory away from Houseweart. Smith still had another solid evening, collecting another Fast Time Award and finishing runner up, with Terrance Robinson third. Howie Ware made a late charge to fourth place, while Brian White rounded out the top five.

MILLER LITE AMERICAN SHORT TRACKERS

Nick Cina Jr left little doubt on Saturday night, blasting from ninth to first in just five laps on his way to his second win of 2017 in the 25 lap Miller Lite American Short Tracker feature race. Cina, who hadn’t won a feature race since Opening Night, outran point leader Zach Rodriguez in the race’s final laps. Rodriguez ended the race in second place and maintained a seven point lead over Cina in the race for the championship. Brett McCoy came across the line in third, followed by Franc Beldowski in fourth and Shannon Stoltz in fifth.

KICKSTART ROADRUNNERS

Though not without a little late-race drama, Josh Thiering picked up his seventh total win in the Roadrunner division on Saturday night, outlasting Chad Lounsbury to claim first place in the 20 lap Kickstart Roadrunner feature race. Thiering took the lead on the race’s fourth lap and seemed to have a solid cushion until Lounsbury appeared in his mirror in the late laps. Despite the last-minute challenge, Thiering held on while Lounsbury settled for second. The two drivers head into their off-weekend with Thiering ahead of Lounsbury in the championship standings by just 15 points. Jeff Allendorf was credited with third in the race, with Adam Cartwright fourth and Robert Roush fifth.

WORLD FAMOUS FIGURE 8 TRAILER RACE

“Scary Gary” Oscarson outlasted 20 other competitors to win the World Famous Figure 8 Trailer Race. The hard-hitting affair produced carnage, lots of action and a three-way battle to the end between Oscarson, Kyle Rush and Collin Day. Rush was eliminated with front suspension issues, while Oscarson and Day ended up attached to each other, leading to a fan vote which determined Oscarson the victor.

GERSTER, RUDE, LOUNSBURY AND ECHLIN TOPS AT SPRINT SPECTACULAR

GERSTER SWEEPS WEEKEND, TAMES ROCKFORDS HIGH BANKS YET AGAIN

Story by: David SInk

Brian Gerster kept his roll going by winning the Must See Racing 50-lap feature Saturday night at Rockford Speedway. It was his second consecutive win in as many nights and finished off the weekend with a sweep of Must See Racing’s western swing through Wisconsin and Illinois.

Gerster finished the night off in convincing fashion by taking the checkered flag by nearly a straightaway lead after setting quick time in qualifications earlier in the day with a lap of 11.597 seconds. He appeared aggressive with lapped cars after taking the lead on lap 8 from early leader Anthony McCune and wasted no time building a sizeable lead early. He nearly lost the race one night earlier when he struggled with lap cars with two laps to go and second place finisher Jimmy McCune took advantage of his struggles to momentarily take the lead, but still managed to hang on for the win. Gerster would have none of that on this night and lapped cars as quickly as possible en-route to a dominating performance.

The win also showed the competition that his Dick Meyers owned machine is now a threat after early season struggles. The car was heavily damaged in an accident last August at Owosso, MI. The entire rear end of the car had to be reconstructed and the team appears to have figured the car out.

In victory lane Gerster alluded to the fact the team has figured the reconstructed car out. “This weekend is sort of a culmination of recovering from our car getting crashed at Owosso last year” explained Gerster.”The back of this thing was completely destroyed. A lot of work went into getting it fixed. The notebook on this thing is fifteen years old or something like that and we kinda had to start over because things are different now. The car has been wanting a different set-up than what we’re used to. We found some things the car likes. Hopefully we can keep rolling”.

Gerster reasoned his aggressive driving style was due to the fact Jimmy McCune would be there at the end. “I figured Jimmy would be there. He really excels at little race tracks like this. I’d come off of two and glance at the main straightaway and could never see him. I figured he was close. Last night I felt like I had a little bit of a lead and then I got hung up with a couple lapped cars with two to go, and he got next to us and almost stole one from us. Just trying to get through lapped traffic as quick as possible. It worked out and we got the win” concluded Gerster. Jimmy McCune finished second while his nephew Anthony McCune finished third after leading the opening 8 laps of the event. Chris Nuenschwander was third and Charlie Schultz rounded out the top five.

RUDE, LOUNSBURY ANS ECHLIN CONQUER FRANTIC FEATURES

Recap by: Clem Easterly

Racing as the undercard to the Must See Racing Sprint Cars during Saturday night’s ‘Sprint Car Spectacular’ at Rockford Speedway, the Miller Lite American Short Trackers, Kickstart Roadrunners and Northern Vintage Racing Series did not disappoint, as each feature was decided in the waning laps and including a variety of close racing and thrilling action which kept an enthusiastic crowd hanging on the edge of their seat at every turn.

In the 25 lap main event for the Miller Lite American Short Trackers, an incredible five-car battle took place for nearly the entire distance of the feature, with the only halt coming at lap 23 when contenders and point leaders Zach Rodriguez and Nick Cina Jr tangled coming off the fourth corner. The tangle brought out the yellow flag and sent both drivers to the tail of the field. Remaining at the front was leader Aaron Rude and Franc Beldowski along with Justin Pearson and David Russell. Each had either contended for the top spot or held it at one point in the race. When the field took the green on the ensuing restart, Rude ran away while Beldowski settled in for second. The duo crossed the line in that fashion, with Rude pocketing his third win of 2017. Veteran racer Steve Rubeck hopped back in a Short Tracker Saturday night and collected a third place finish for his efforts. Russel was scored fourth, while Pearson rounded out the top five.

The 20 lap Kickstart Roadrunner feature race was closely contested, with most of the eight-car field staying within striking distance of one another most of the way. Chicago’s Pat Ligue led most of the race and appeared to have just enough to pocket his first Rockford Speedway win, but a slight slip opened the door late for Chad Lounsbury, who made his move for the lead with under five laps to go. Meanwhile, as Lounsbury tried to rip the lead away from Ligue, point leaded Josh Thiering worked some late-race magic to gain on the top two cars and had just enough left to pressure Lounsbury for the win on the final lap. Thiering came up just short at the line, settling for second place while Lounsbury took the win and also swept the night after winning the Fast Dash and his Heat Race. Ligue settled for third, while Kevin Memoli came home in fourth and Austin Fowler rounded out the top five.

For the first time ever, the Northern Vintage Stock Car Series hit the track on Saturday night, making their debut at Rockford Speedway. When the dust settled on their 15 lap feature race, Dyer Indiana’s Pat Echlin took the win, holding off a last lap challenge from Joe Darnell. Howie Ware won the Vintage Heat Race and took third in the feature, with Tony Brutti fourth and Nick Letsinger fifth.

By Steve Reeves – On yet another Wild Wednesday at Rockford Speedway, with the air just as heavy as the action on the race track, six championship point paying Equipment Depot main events were all completed right before the skies again let loose on July 26, 2017. Nicole Mueller rose to the occasion in Winged Women on Wheels, Gary Ballard hoisted the Original Sixers hardware, Erik Pearson boosted the Hornets, Kelsey Dobbs elevated his Bandit stock, and Josh Thiering picked up both the RoadRunner Super Summer Series and Figure 8 wins! With only two Wild Wednesday’s left on the schedule, the competition grabbed all they could as the season is wrapping up for some of the classes.

Mueller swept the Winged Women on Wheels division, claiming both the heat and the feature. She started the main event from the optimum outside front row position, and had command from green-to-checkers. Point leader Destiny Genore pushed to and past the competition limits, but recovered for solid second place results and looks to secure her first championship. Second year racer Ashley Matts, claimed third, also in both the heat and feature.

Erik Pearson was named the winner in the Hornet “Swarm”. Erik took the green from second in the “F-1 style”, standing-start grid. After one car caught fire on the original start, exciting three wide racing ensued on the next attempt. The top cars checked out from the rest of the entry-level four-cylinder field, but battles for positions continued. In the end, Pearson – also winning the heat – recorded the division’s first feature victory of the year. Ben Rucker and Shannon Helmer trailed.

Lining up for the second Original Sixers official night of the season, Gary Ballard started from the preferred outside pole. He led the main from flag-to-flag, but the other six-cylinder racers did all they could to elevate their positions. Stephen Hillary upped his game after the feature was past halfway, and scooped up the runner-up spot. Bradley Lounsbury started on the pole and secured a solid third placing.

The RoadRunner Super Summer Series was not without action for the traditional V-8 rear-wheel drive racers, over-coming even a rain delay and track drying. Chad Lounsbury ran the top groove and did all he could to hold off point leader Josh Thiering. Carving into Lounsbury’s advantage, Thiering dug underneath and completed the winning pass in the waning laps. Thanks to car-owner for the night, Terry Gerber, Rich Schinderling, Jr took third and sits behind Thiering in the season rankings.

The Bandit feature was one of the most exciting, as usual. Unlike previous main events of the year in the division, when it was just the top couple cars among an intense fight for the win, a larger pack of the slightly modified 4-cylinder cars were able to challenge though. Jeff Parisot took off from the pole and held command for the first five laps. Destiny Genore (without the wing on top), Bart Brockman, and Richard Warren (from the fifth row) battled hard for the second position early. Soon, Kelsey Dobbs and Nick Schmidt made their way up the tight pack and some of the others were shuffled back. Dobbs & Genore ran lap after lap side-by-side, while Schmidt poked underneath the pair at times. Clean three-wide racing went off without any major incident. With the reins off, intensity increased on the last lap, and Dobbs exalted his way to the win. Genore and Schmidt were scored second and third. Dobbs closed the gap to Bandit point leader Duane Lounsbury, who was un-able to challenge upfront in the end.

Thiering capped the night with a dominating Figure-8 victory. Schinderling, Jr kept the pressure on through-out and late, smoking his borrowed car chasing Thiering. He followed Thiering across the infield, “Figure-8 specific”, finish line. Dave Lumsden, Jr secured second runner-up. Thiering and Schinderling, Jr are tied in the division standings, heading into next Wednesday’s Double Figure-8 night!

Tomorrow, Saturday, July 29, should offer a full course of racing action for all different appetites. The Must See Racing Sprint Car Series make their much anticipated return to the high-banked quarter mile. Dubbed the ‘World’s Fastest Short Track Show’; open wheel winged car drivers – from at least Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana – look to stage exciting events, while also continuing their on-going assault on the all-time Rockford Speedway track record. The Northern Vintage Stock Car Series will be staging the series inaugural event; campaigning historic stock car bodied full size racers. Many veteran drivers from the Rockford Speedway, as well as those from tracks around the region, have committed to compete. The Miller Lite American Short Trackers and Kickstart Roadrunners Rockford Speedway NASCAR “core” divisions are on the slate as well. The track’s regular “house-hold names” look to continue their tight on-track battles and tight point races. Pit Gates open at 2 PM, with Sprint Car Practice running from 3:30 PM until 4:30 PM. Local divisions take to the track for Practice from 4:35-5:25 PM. Ticket Windows open at 5 PM, with Must See Racing Sprint Car Qualifying at 5:30 PM and Short Tracker Qualifying to follow. Racing action begins at 7:07 PM. Adult admission (ages 12 and up) is $18, while Children (ages 6-11) are $9 and Kids 5 and under are admitted FREE.

70th CELEBRATION A SHOWCASE OF FAMILY AND ENTERTAINMENT

By: Eric Huenefeld

On a warm yet perfect Saturday night, fans and drivers gathered at the corner of State Road 173 and Forest Hills Road to do what they have done since May of 1948.

It’s become part of people’s weekly routines. Fascinations have started here. Friendships have began here. Careers began here.

For over 70 years, Rockford Speedway has been that place. It’s withstood all of which time has thrown at it. Sometimes things haven’t been easy. But through it all, Rockford Speedway has persevered.

Businesses and industry have come and gone. Sports franchises have came to town and left just as quickly. But since 1948, Rockford Speedway has carried on.

Saturday night was a celebration of 70 years. A celebration of speed, of entertainment and of family.

When speaking of Rockford Speedway and of family, one must look no further than the Deery family and matriarch Jody. The 92 year old still is sharp as ever and an ever-present figure at each Rockford Speedway event. It was her, along with her late husband Hugh, who helped put Rockford Speedway on the map starting in the late in 1960’s. From National Short Track Championships to ‘Rockford Rules” Late Models, to Trailer Races and Spectacular Drags, the Deery legacy not only lives on at Rockford Speedway, but at short tracks across America.

Further evidence of family playing a huge role at Rockford Speedway can be found in the results of the 70th Anniversary Feature races. The Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Model Feature was an example of that, with names like Reynolds and Bilderback battling for the win. When the checkered flag flew, it was Jon Reynolds Jr narrowly holding off Michael Bilderback for the victory. Reynolds called his win “the second biggest of my career,” trailing only his 2015 National Short Track Championship triumph. In the Bargain Hunter Sportsman feature, Trevor Robinson bested Johnny Robinson II for the win, making it a 1-2 sweep for the Robinson family, a very familiar name at Rockford Speedway. The Robinsons have been long associated with Rockford Speedway, the color purple and the number 99. Meanwhile, Miller Lite American Short Tracker winner Zach Rodriguez bagged his division leading fourth feature win Saturday night in a division he has become one of the top dogs in. That’s fitting, because Zach’s father Andy was one of the originals in the Short Tracker class back in the 1980’s.

In the name of excitement, look towards the Kickstart Roadrunner main event. 20 straight laps of green flag racing, with Adam Cartwright outdistancing point leader Josh Thiering and hard-charging Chad Lounsbury for the win. The three cars raced in tight formation all race, with Cartwright barely beating Thiering to the line at the end. Despite sporting one of the smallest starting fields in Roadrunner history, the race was a fitting 70th Anniversary tribute to the class known for thrilling, side-by-side racing. And during the 20 laps, not one of the fans was consumed with the quantity of cars, but were thrilled by the quality of the racing.

Excitement also came in the form of free food giveaways, an appearance by the DOC Drift Racers, who wowed the enthusiastic crowd with their daring deeds during intermission. The grand climax to the night, an outstanding 70th Anniversary Fireworks show, was a fitting close to a special night.

It was said years ago by Hugh Deery himself that while “Daytona and Indianapolis are in the racing business, we are in the entertainment business.” This fact was on display Saturday night at the facility he helped make famous.

Over the next few weeks, a variety of racing and fun sweep into Rockford Speedway as the 70th Anniversary season heads into its homestretch. This Saturday July 29 features the ‘Worlds Fastest Short Track Show’ as the Must See Racing Sprint Cars take to the high banks with their unmatched speed. On Saturday August 5 it’s ‘the wildest show on wheels’ with Kar Korner’s World Famous Figure 8 Trailer Race. Then on Saturday August 12, it’s Cintas Kids Night featuring FREE admission for Kids 11 and under plus Kids Bike Races and the Great Bike Giveaway.

Racing continues at Rockford Speedway until late October. Make sure and find some time to visit the track and bring your family and friends. For more information
