By Steve Reeves – On yet another Wild Wednesday at Rockford Speedway, with the air just as heavy as the action on the race track, six championship point paying Equipment Depot main events were all completed right before the skies again let loose on July 26, 2017. Nicole Mueller rose to the occasion in Winged Women on Wheels, Gary Ballard hoisted the Original Sixers hardware, Erik Pearson boosted the Hornets, Kelsey Dobbs elevated his Bandit stock, and Josh Thiering picked up both the RoadRunner Super Summer Series and Figure 8 wins! With only two Wild Wednesday’s left on the schedule, the competition grabbed all they could as the season is wrapping up for some of the classes.

Mueller swept the Winged Women on Wheels division, claiming both the heat and the feature. She started the main event from the optimum outside front row position, and had command from green-to-checkers. Point leader Destiny Genore pushed to and past the competition limits, but recovered for solid second place results and looks to secure her first championship. Second year racer Ashley Matts, claimed third, also in both the heat and feature.

Erik Pearson was named the winner in the Hornet “Swarm”. Erik took the green from second in the “F-1 style”, standing-start grid. After one car caught fire on the original start, exciting three wide racing ensued on the next attempt. The top cars checked out from the rest of the entry-level four-cylinder field, but battles for positions continued. In the end, Pearson – also winning the heat – recorded the division’s first feature victory of the year. Ben Rucker and Shannon Helmer trailed.

Lining up for the second Original Sixers official night of the season, Gary Ballard started from the preferred outside pole. He led the main from flag-to-flag, but the other six-cylinder racers did all they could to elevate their positions. Stephen Hillary upped his game after the feature was past halfway, and scooped up the runner-up spot. Bradley Lounsbury started on the pole and secured a solid third placing.

The RoadRunner Super Summer Series was not without action for the traditional V-8 rear-wheel drive racers, over-coming even a rain delay and track drying. Chad Lounsbury ran the top groove and did all he could to hold off point leader Josh Thiering. Carving into Lounsbury’s advantage, Thiering dug underneath and completed the winning pass in the waning laps. Thanks to car-owner for the night, Terry Gerber, Rich Schinderling, Jr took third and sits behind Thiering in the season rankings.

The Bandit feature was one of the most exciting, as usual. Unlike previous main events of the year in the division, when it was just the top couple cars among an intense fight for the win, a larger pack of the slightly modified 4-cylinder cars were able to challenge though. Jeff Parisot took off from the pole and held command for the first five laps. Destiny Genore (without the wing on top), Bart Brockman, and Richard Warren (from the fifth row) battled hard for the second position early. Soon, Kelsey Dobbs and Nick Schmidt made their way up the tight pack and some of the others were shuffled back. Dobbs & Genore ran lap after lap side-by-side, while Schmidt poked underneath the pair at times. Clean three-wide racing went off without any major incident. With the reins off, intensity increased on the last lap, and Dobbs exalted his way to the win. Genore and Schmidt were scored second and third. Dobbs closed the gap to Bandit point leader Duane Lounsbury, who was un-able to challenge upfront in the end.

Thiering capped the night with a dominating Figure-8 victory. Schinderling, Jr kept the pressure on through-out and late, smoking his borrowed car chasing Thiering. He followed Thiering across the infield, “Figure-8 specific”, finish line. Dave Lumsden, Jr secured second runner-up. Thiering and Schinderling, Jr are tied in the division standings, heading into next Wednesday’s Double Figure-8 night!

Tomorrow, Saturday, July 29, should offer a full course of racing action for all different appetites. The Must See Racing Sprint Car Series make their much anticipated return to the high-banked quarter mile. Dubbed the ‘World’s Fastest Short Track Show’; open wheel winged car drivers – from at least Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana – look to stage exciting events, while also continuing their on-going assault on the all-time Rockford Speedway track record. The Northern Vintage Stock Car Series will be staging the series inaugural event; campaigning historic stock car bodied full size racers. Many veteran drivers from the Rockford Speedway, as well as those from tracks around the region, have committed to compete. The Miller Lite American Short Trackers and Kickstart Roadrunners Rockford Speedway NASCAR “core” divisions are on the slate as well. The track’s regular “house-hold names” look to continue their tight on-track battles and tight point races. Pit Gates open at 2 PM, with Sprint Car Practice running from 3:30 PM until 4:30 PM. Local divisions take to the track for Practice from 4:35-5:25 PM. Ticket Windows open at 5 PM, with Must See Racing Sprint Car Qualifying at 5:30 PM and Short Tracker Qualifying to follow. Racing action begins at 7:07 PM. Adult admission (ages 12 and up) is $18, while Children (ages 6-11) are $9 and Kids 5 and under are admitted FREE.
