Jake Gille Holds on for First Feature Win at Rockford

By Jordan Kuehne

LOVES PARK, IL. (Saturday, May 30, 2009) – Jake Gille celebrated his 21st birthday in style, albeit a week late, holding off Tim Noble and going wire-to-wire to bring home his first career Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Model feature win. An emotional Scott Lawver held off a hard-charging Fred Nason a week after the passing of Lawver’s father, collecting his second Bargain Hunter Sportsman feature win of 2009 and earning a standing ovation from a supportive crowd. Larry Dickinson II brought home the Mtn Dew RoadRunners main event.

Jake Gille grabbed the early advantage in the 30 lap Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models headliner. Gille led the 13 car field to the green flag and was edging away from rookie Mikie Breiner when the caution flag flew on lap eight.

The top three drivers in points, seven-time track champion Ricky “the Rocket” Bilderback, current points leader Jon Reynolds Jr, and defending champion Jerry Gille all got tangled up on the frontstretch after Reynolds Jr’s motor suddenly soured. Gille, trying to avoid Reynolds Jr, spun out and Bilderback, unable to get out of the way in time, smashed into the rear end of Gille.

Reynolds Jr. would be forced to retire to the pits for the evening and Bilderback only managed one more lap around the track before pulling into the infield with overheating problems.

On the restart, Jake Gille, Jerry's 21-year-old nephew, jumped out to a four car-length lead over Janesville, WI native Tim Noble. Jerry Gille had more problems on lap 10, getting together with 17-year-old Tyler Peterson, sending Gille to the back of the field.

Jake Gille managed to keep his nose clean over the final 15 laps crossing the finish line four car lengths ahead of Noble as the checkered flag flew.

"We've been strong these last two weeks and the car has been rounding into shape," an elated Gille stated in victory lane. "There's going to be another party tonight after this (win)."

Breiner, Mark Hartline and rookie John Beinlich completed the top five.

A week after the passing of his father, an emotional Scott Lawver jumped out to the early lead in the 25 lap main event for the Bargain Hunter Sportsman and never relinquished the top spot, finding his way back to victory lane for the second time in 2009.

The caution would fly early on for an accident on the backstretch involving Chris Gantz and fast qualifier Fred Nason with seven laps in the books. Gantz knocked down the wall in turn three and Ricky Nielson, trying to avoid Gantz’ machine, couldn’t avoid the turn four wall. Nason, using the reinstated restart cone to his advantage, jumped up to second pushing his way by Butch Swinbank on the low side.

Halfway through the feature, Lawver started feeling the heat from Nason as the defending champion in the Sportsman division began peeking on the inside. The two veteran drivers went side-by-side for the final twelve laps battling hard for the win. Lawver managed to hold on to the top spot, bringing home the win by half a car-length over Nason.

An emotional Lawver celebrated in victory lane, stating he had “help from above” in collecting his second feature win of the young season.

"I want to thank Fred for racing me so clean out there," a choked up Lawver stated after climbing from his car on the frontstretch. "I feel like I cheated out there because two people were driving. My dad was right there with me."

Nason, Swinbank, the winner of last weekend’s feature, Doug Bennett, and Don Exline rounded out the top five.

Jason Van Hise took the early lead in the 20 lap Mtn Dew RoadRunners main event. The caution flew on lap five after Linnea Lundy and Lloyd Hawkins made hard contact on the backstretch sending both drivers home early.

Larry Dickinson II took the lead away from Van Hise on the restart, diving to the bottom entering turn one and pulling ahead exiting turn two. Dickinson held on the rest of the way topping the 25 car field and banking his second feature win of the season.
