Frisch Caps off Wild Wednesday Finale with Late Race Charge to Victory

By Jordan Kuehne

LOVES PARK, Ill. (Wednesday, August 12, 2009) – It was only fitting that on the 2009 Wild Wednesday finale at the Rockford Speedway, the action ratcheted up a couple extra notches as “Chargin” Charlie Frisch put on a show, coming from the back to the front twice to edge out Gene Marocco for the win in the 25-lap Mtn Dew RoadRunner Super Summer Series headliner. Marocco would exact his revenge in the point standings though, holding off Frisch’s late efforts to claim the 2009 Mtn Dew RoadRunner Super Summer Series crown by just 31 points. In a wild Crap Scrappers Hornets feature event, two cars flipped and the leader crashed with just two laps remaining as Justin Pearson survived the carnage to claim the checkers. Dwight Dunlap, Lloyd Hawkins, Aaron Moyer, Sabrina Gantz and Cory Cootware also collected feature victories on the evening.

The action was fast and furious in the early stages of the 25-lap Mtn Dew RoadRunner Super Summer Series 2009 finale as “Captain” Chris Gantz and Jason Brockway battled side-by-side for the top position over the first ten laps while Charlie Frisch charged into third.

Frisch fell back to sixth when he was turned sideways exiting turn two, enabling veteran driver and points leader Gene Marocco to grab the lead. Marocco worked over Gantz for the top spot, completing the pass with seven laps remaining. Seven laps was all “Chargin” Charlie needed though, as he worked his way from sixth to second before turning his sights toward Marocco.

Frisch managed to get alongside Marocco for the lead with two circuits to go, completing an amazing comeback for what ended up being a bittersweet feature victory.

While Marocco had to settle for second in the race, he held on to take home the 2009 Mtn Dew RoadRunner Super Summer Series championship over Frisch, the defending champion, by just 31 points.

Gantz, Brockway and Lloyd Hawkins rounded out the top five.

The Crap Scrappers Hornets 15-lap swarm got off to a wild start when Chandale Swartout flipped over driving through the Monza section on the first lap. Swartout managed to walk away unharmed but her night was over prematurely.

On the ensuing restart, Randy Reynolds grabbed the top spot and was out front when Steve McBride and Jake Vicencio got together, sending another car flipping, this time McBride. McBride somehow managed to land upright and drive his car back into the pits.

Reynolds was racing to a victory when, with just two laps remaining, he locked up the brakes entering turn three and smacked the wall, ending the race in ninth place.

Justin Pearson took advantage, inheriting the lead from Reynolds and holding off a late race charge from Vinny Mangiaracina for the victory.

Solomon Barker, Alan Bekielewski and Mark Vicencio finished off the top five.

Adam Rawski grabbed the top spot in the early stages of the 20-lap INEX Legends main event. Chris Lishamer made his move five laps in using the low line to take away the lead from Rawski, bringing Tom Palma into second. Palma clipped Lishamer attempting a pass for the lead, sending Palma’s rearend soaring into the air but he kept it going and drove into first despite the contact.

Fast qualifier Aaron Moyer inherited the runner-up spot with nine laps remaining as the caution flew for an unassisted spin by Lishamer on the frontstretch. On the restart, Moyer closed up on Palma’s back bumper, setting his sights on the lead. Moyer set up Palma for the pass, completing the move with just under four laps remaining to take the lead.

Moyer picked up his first feature win of the season while Palma, Rawski, Kyle Jusits and Lishamer rounded out the top five.

Dwight Dunlap took home the championship and the feature in the Allison Legacy division, taking the lead away from Brian Heaberlin four laps in and dodging two late cautions for his seventh win of the season.

Heaberlin, Austin Nason, Bill Fox and Kyle Voss completed the top five.

Dunlap was the class of the field all summer, winning the championship in dominating fashion.

Sabrina Gantz went wire-to-wire to win the 12-lap headliner for the Stateline Staffing Services Winged Women on Wheels. Gantz held off a late charge from runner-up Olivia Chance while 2009 Stateline Staffing Services Winged Women on Wheels champion Robin Ulrey came home third.

Ulrey edged out Chance by 14 points in the final standings.

Cory Cootware kept his reign as king of the INEX Bandoleros alive tonight on Wild Wednesday, jumping past Paul Fusco when the green flag waved and going wire-to-wire to win the 12-lap feature event. Cootware claimed all six INEX Bandolero features he raced in this summer.

Paul Fusco, Morgan Melichar, Jonny Kringas, and Jimmy Wessel completed the top five.

Lloyd Hawkins went wire-to-wire to win the 10-lap National Figure 8 League’s 2009 finale, holding off Jason Brockway by just a half car-length in a wild dash to the finish.

Charlie Frisch, Tom Schneider and Jeff Allendorf rounded out the top five.

Tom Schneider was crowned the 2009 National Figure 8 League champion, topping Allendorf for the title.
