LOVES PARK, Ill. (Saturday, June 12th, 2010) – The clock hasn’t struck midnight on Tim Sargent’s dream season just yet. The South Beloit hotshoe collected his second feature victory of the 2010 season at the Rockford Speedway tonight leading 28 laps of the 30-lap headliner and padding his points lead in the Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models. BJ Sparkman found his way into victory lane in the Budweiser American Short Trackers while Matt Lundberg navigated into the winner’s circle for the first time this season in the Bargain Hunter Sportsman’ main event. Jason Van Hise, Ed Ensor, and Jacob Van Wazer also collected feature victories this evening.
Points leader Tim Sargent surged to the front of the 18 car pack, claiming the early lead in the 30-lap feature for the Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models. Steve Rubeck maneuvered past Mikie Breiner into second as Jon Reynolds Jr. romped from eighth to third in five laps.
The first caution flew for a Kyle Shear spin in turn two as he looked to avoid a loose Breiner. On the ensuing restart, Rubeck began applying pressure to Sargent’s back bumper, eyeing the lead. Another caution flew for an accident involving Vern Fagerberg Jr. and Tyler Peterson as Fagerberg Jr’s night ended on the hook.
Reynolds Jr. asserted himself on the restart, working his way by Rubeck on the inside to claim second as two-time defending champion Jerry Gille found himself up to fourth. Just when it appeared as though Reynolds Jr. might challenge for a chance to break his 2010 victory drought, his rocketship broke entering turn one shooting him into the wall and ruining a promising evening with 15 laps remaining.
Sargent surged forward on the restart and hit his marks over the final half of the event to collect his second feature victory of 2010 and help extend his points lead.
“This car was hooked up from the beginning of the feature and I knew I had to get it home (and hit my marks),” a pleased Sargent stated in the winner’s circle. “The whole season, we’ve been close to the front at the end of the race and consistently bringing home solid finishes. It feels good to be ahead of the field (in points) at this point but we know there’s a long ways left to go.”
Mike Lloyd continued his stellar campaign landing second as Ryan Carlson made a solid return and held off a hungry Steve Rubeck for third. Jerry Gille rounded out the top five with a solid points night in fifth.
In the early stages of the Bargain Hunter Sportsman feature, ‘Mr. Skittles’, Ron Morris, held the 12 car field in his rearview mirror as he set the pace. Young Austin Nason wasn’t conceding anything though, pushing to the inside of Morris as the young gun looked for the lead with 18 laps remaining.
The 14-year-old driver nosed past Morris for the top spot as the caution flew for an unassisted Matt Doris spin in turn four. On the restart, Nason edged ahead of past champion Brock Behnke and the veteran began to set up a pass for the lead. Behnke didn’t have much time to look for an opening though as Matt Lundberg forcefully took second on the outside, bringing Matt Berger with him into third.
Another caution paused the proceedings with nine circuits to go as Nason tried to hang on for his first career feature win. Berger had a great restart, jumping to the inside of Nason looking for the lead. Melee ensued when Nason’s machine broke loose on the backstretch making contact with Berger and shooting his machine into points leader Doug Bennett, sending the fast qualifier hard into the turn three retaining wall. Behnke had nowhere to go and slammed into the wall, ending his night early.
Matt Lundberg took advantage of the mayhem, inheriting the lead with eight laps remaining and building a cushion over second place Justin Sellers. A late race rally by Sellers put a scare in Lundberg but it wasn’t enough as the Rockford driver held on for his first feature victory of 2010 piloting his station wagon into the winner’s circle.
Sellers came home second while Nason rallied for third.
Ron Morris had a solid effort taking fourth and Butch Swinbank rounded out the top five.
Rachel Sparkman snatched the lead when the green flag waved for the 25-lap Budweiser American Short Trackers main event. Points leader Nick Cina Jr. and Jason Bragg wasted no time in moving to the front, proceeding up to second and third respectively before commencing a duel for the bridesmaid’s position.
Bragg edged into second on the outside turning his sights toward the leader as Cina Jr. dropped back to fifth. Scott Hoeft maneuvered past George Sparkman into third as Bragg eyed the inside line and the lead. Hoeft nudged Bragg past Rachel Sparkman for the top spot with 14 laps remaining.
The caution soon followed as Cina Jr. spun in turn three and an unfortunate Keith Pierce made contact with his machine. On the restart, Rachel Sparkman tried to secure second and slam the door shut on Hoeft when there was simply no room to do so. Consequently Sparkman popped her tire and spun hard into the turn one wall; there would be no repeat of her historic feature win a few weeks earlier.
Bragg led the field to the halfway point as George Sparkman looked for the top spot. Trouble came when Bragg and Sparkman made contact on the backstretch, sending them around and Scott Hoeft scrambling to avoid the turn three point. Sparkman limped to the pits with two flat tires while Bragg fell to the rear of the field. Hoeft’s night was over early.
The benefactor of the mishap up front was BJ Sparkman who collected the lead with 12 circuits to go. Sparkman was smooth all the way to the finish, holding off fast qualifier Kyle Lapier for the win, his first of the season.
Cina Jr. rallied for a hard-fought third while Joe LaMarca had a good run coming home fourth. Keith Pierce wrapped up the top five in fifth.
Billy McCoy led the field to green in the 20-lap Mtn Dew RoadRunners main event. Jason Van Hise pushed past McCoy on the bottom to snatch the top spot two laps in and began cushioning himself from the battles being waged behind him. Gene Marocco eyed second from McCoy, going door-to-door with his fellow veteran before working his way by three laps later.
Robert Roush followed Marocco past McCoy and into third as ‘Chargin’ Charlie Frisch wasted no time moving to the front, finding himself in fourth when a caution flew with nine laps remaining for fluid on the racing surface.
On the restart, Roush got by Marocco on the outside and began to peek on the inside of Van Hise for the lead. Marocco wasn’t done yet though, fighting back on the outside of Roush as he dueled for second. Van Hise held on for the win, his first of 2010.
Marocco elbowed his way into second and Frisch charged past on the outside to steal third and relegate Roush to fourth. Anthony Lloyd came home fifth.
Ed Ensor grabbed the lead when the green flag waved on the 18-lap CSR Super Cup Pro headliner. Ensor was well ahead when a red flag stopped the field for a hard wreck in turn two involving Jamie Domski and Derrick VanDreel. Both drivers were able to walk away from the incident.
Ensor held on after the restart to collect the victory as Tony Velez held off Jim Termanas at the line for second. Steve Naples and Nathan Kelley finished off the top five in fourth and fifth respectively.
Jacob Van Wazer jumped out front at the beginning of the 15-lap CSR Super Cup Junior feature event and paced the seven car field the whole way going wire-to-wire to collect the victory. Kodee Busekros rallied from his fifth place starting spot to come home second, holding off Tyler Brown for the bridesmaid’s position.
11 cars took to the track in the Sam’s Drive-In RoadRunner Challenge Stop ‘N Go Race that features drivers racing around the track and stopping on command, with the last car to stop eliminated from the event. After a few stopping periods, Jason Van Hise paced the field around setting the pace for the machines following behind him. With just five cars remaining, Lloyd Hawkins led the field to the white flag and held on, crossing the finish line ahead of Howie Ware for the win.
Racing returns to the high banks of the legendary facility next weekend as the World Famous Original Trailer Race of Destruction promises to wow the crowd. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series will feature the Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models, Bargain Hunter Sportsman, Mtn Dew RoadRunners plus the Sam’s Drive-In RoadRunner Challenge featuring the Hare ‘N Hound Race. Also on deck are the Illini Open-Wheeled Midgets and all tickets previously purchased for the June 5th trailer race will be honored for the evening’s events. Main grandstand seating will cost $18 and kids under 11 will cost $9. Gates open at 5pm with qualifying set to begin at 6pm. The green flag will wave at 7:07pm sharp.
