Frisch Makes His Return to Rockford, Finds Victory Lane in Opening Wild Wednesday

By Jordan Kuehne

LOVES PARK, Ill. (Wednesday, June 16th, 2010) – ‘Bullet’ Bobby Frisch made a successful return to the high banks of the Rockford Speedway tonight, taking home the opening win to kick off Wild Wednesdays and collect the early points lead in the 2010 Mtn Dew RoadRunner Super Summer Series. Frisch held off a hard-charging Gene Marocco for the victory, his first since claiming the 2009 championship for the Mtn Dew RoadRunners, and pulled off the double, winning the National Figure 8 League feature to close out the evening. Vinny Mangiaracina, Josh Kreyer, Tracy Wallin, Dwight Dunlap, and Cory Cootware also collected victories tonight.

Jason Van Hise snagged the top spot when the green flag waved on the 25-lap Mtn Dew RoadRunners Super Summer Series showcase. Anthony Lloyd worked his way into second and turned his sights toward the leader with 20 circuits to go, looking for the lead.

Lloyd grabbed the lead, albeit briefly, when Van Hise fell off the pace six laps in, only to succumb to the pressure being applied to his rear bumper by Dennis Smith Jr. Defending champion on Saturday nights in the Mtn Dew RoadRunners division, “Bullet” Bobby Frisch wasted no time moving past Lloyd into second and going to the bottom of Smith Jr. for the lead.

Frisch completed the pass with 14 laps to go, elbowing his way by Smith Jr. exiting turn two and swiftly building a cushion over second. Fast qualifier Gene Marocco began to push Smith Jr. as he eyed the bridesmaid’s position, using the low line of the high banked quarter-mile to inch his way into second.

Marocco knifed into Frisch’s margin over the final five laps but fell short, settling for second. Bobby Frisch made his return to the high banks in style, topping the 13-car field and charging into the winner’s circle in his first start of 2010.

Dennis Smith Jr. collected a solid third place finish as Terrance Robinson found fourth in the late stages of the race. Veteran Lloyd Hawkins rounded the top five in fifth.

Scott Dixon passed Dennis Deckard for the lead with four laps completed in the Crap Scrappers Hornet Swarm. Devon Dixon followed his brother into second and immediately made it a family affair up front, challenging for the top spot on the family hierarchy. Vinny Mangiaracina soon broke through the ranks though, challenging the family tandem up front for the win.

The caution flew with six laps remaining as the leader, Scott Dixon, cut down a tire and careened into the turn two wall, ending his promising run prematurely. On the restart, Mangiaracina snatched the lead, passing Devon Dixon on the bottom and pushing his lead out to three car lengths within two turns.

Dixon put together a late race rally but couldn’t make his machine handle through the apex of the turns, sliding out wide and losing traction. Mangiaracina hit his marks and collected the opening win of 2010 for the Crap Scrappers Hornets with Dixon five car lengths behind at the finish line.

Steve McBride came home with a solid third while Deckard held on for fourth. Justin Pearson rallied for fifth.

The INEX Legends feature got off to a fast start as the 20-lap event played host to a couple of battles up front. The duel for the top spot raged on between Josh Kreyer and Brandon Heisler for the opening 15 laps before Kreyer finally managed to build a cushion. Behind the leaders, Chris Lishamer was ratcheting up the pressure on Mark Sissulak for third.

As Kreyer took the white flag, Heisler gave it a last gasp effort for the win diving to the bottom of the track in turn one and making it stick exiting the corner. The two drivers went door-to-door through turns three and four before Kreyer hammered the gas coming to the checkered flag, edging Heisler by a nose for the win.

Young gun Cory Cootware came home with a stellar third place effort after his success earlier in the evening.
Cory Cootware drove from the back to the front within three laps in the 12-lap INEX Bandelero main event. The 11-year-old driver worked his way by Johnny Kringas on the bottom line to snatch the lead with eight laps remaining and was pacing the field at the halfway mark when the caution flew for a hard wreck involving Triston Batson and Morgan Melichar in turn four.

Cootware jumped out on the restart and hit his marks over the final six laps to collect the first Bandelero feature win of 2010. Kringas held on for second fending off Deanna Chandler’s late race move.

Dwight Dunlap maneuvered from his back starting spot into first on the opening lap of the 15-lap Allison Legacy feature event. It was all ‘Double D’ from there as Brian Heaberlin’s efforts for the win proved futile. Dunlap kicked off his 2010 season on the right note as he looks to defend his title from last season over the course of the summer.

Heaberlin managed to hang on for second as Kyle Voss rounded out the field in third.

The 12-lap Winged Women on Wheels headliner was all about Tracy Wallin and her return to the quarter-mile. 18 years ago Wallin claimed the championship in the division and she made her return in style tonight, sweeping the evening’s events.

Olivia Chance survived the attrition to collect second.

Bobby Frisch jumped out front in the wild and crazy 10-lap National Figure 8 League feature. Defending champion Tom Schneider wasn’t far behind, going toe-to-toe with Frisch over the course of the opening six laps, trying to track down the leader. A caution flew with four circuits to go closing up the field but Frisch was quick on the throttle when the green waved, fending off Schneider for the win.

Dennis Smith Jr. managed a hard fought third while Lloyd Hawkins held on for fourth, edging fifth place Jonathon Stoltz.
