LOVES PARK, Ill. (Wednesday, July 28th, 2010) – Faster than a speeding bullet, Bobby Frisch did his nickname ‘Bullet’ justice tonight at the Rockford Speedway as he claimed his second consecutive headliner for the Mtn Dew Super Summer Series. Frisch, the 2009 champion in the Mtn Dew RoadRunners, only needed 11 laps of the 25-lap main event to collect the lead and held off a hard-charging Terrence Robinson for the victory, his third of the summer. Vinny Mangiaracina, Tom Schneider, Rachael Pinkerman, Tracy Wallin, Kyle Voss, and Cory Cootware also found their way into victory lane on Wild Wednesday at the quarter-mile oval.
Anthony Vito made his return to the high banks of the legendary Rockford Speedway after a one-month hiatus and negotiated into the top spot on the opening circuit of the 25-lap showcase for the Mtn Dew RoadRunners Super Summer Series.
Beau Lawson managed to take second behind Vito as ‘Bullet’ Bobby Frisch worked his way up to third in six laps using the inside line. Frisch wasted no time gunning it by Lawson on the bottom as he turned his sights towards Vito and the lead.
Frisch took over the top spot with 11 laps completed as Terrence Robinson looked to follow his trail and take second from Vito using the low line. Robinson grabbed the bridesmaid’s position two laps later and had nine laps to try and track down Frisch for the win.
Behind the leaders, Vito fell off the pace and sacrificed third place as he exited to the pits. Dennis Smith Jr. inched his way into the third spot, getting past Lawson on the bottom as fast qualifier Kris Nilson followed suit into fourth. Nilson immediately went to battle with Smith Jr. for third as Robinson methodically tracked down Frisch out front.
Frisch held on for his third feature victory of the summer, holding off Robinson for the win.
Nilson claimed third as Smith Jr. took fourth. Points leader Gene Marocco rounded out the top five in fifth.
The 15-lap Crap Scrappers Hornets Swarm was ran on the Monza course for the first time in 2010. Deric Bloomingdale led the 14 car field into the infield out of turn two as the race got underway, before diving back out towards turn three and racing down the frontstretch.
Steve McBride successfully negotiated his way around Bloomingdale on the infield as Vinny Mangiaracina eyed the lead. Mangiaracina didn’t even lift through the chicane as he wrestled the lead away from McBride on lap three.
The caution waved with four laps in the books for debris in turn four as the field came to a halt for the traditional Hornets’ standing-start finish. A fast and furious restart saw Mangiaracina drive to the lead as McBride settled into second. Behind the leaders, Devon Dixon and Deric Bloomingdale got involved in a dustup that cost Dixon his fourth place position.
Up front, Mangiaracina felt the heat from McBride as the veteran looked to hold him off. Despite McBride’s best efforts on the final lap, Mangiaracina fended him off for the win as he extended his points lead.
Bobby Yonkee notched a stellar third place effort as Bloomingdale held on for fourth. Mark Seipts completed the top five in fifth.
Kyle Voss headed the five car field to the green in the 15-lap Allison Legacy feature. Defending champion Dwight Dunlap settled into second as he eyed the lead.
Dunlap washed up the track exiting turn two with 10 circuits remaining as Mark Hayes edged his way into the bridesmaid’s position. With sparks flying from the leader, Dunlap jumped back into second and began to close up on Voss’ back bumper.
With five laps to go, Dunlap threw his car deep into turn four as he tried to find his way into the lead. Behind the leaders, Hayes fell off the pace and exited to the infield as his night was done. With the white flag in the air, Dunlap gave it one last ditch effort on the bottom groove but came up short as Kyle Voss went wire-to-wire for his second career feature victory and his second consecutive win.
Dunlap settled for second as Brian Heaberlin collected a top three.
The 12-lap Winged Women on Wheels headliner was commandeered by Mary McBride in the early stages. Tracy Wallin quickly worked her way up to second and set her sights on the leader. Points leader Olivia Chance joined the fray up front to make it a three car battle up front.
McBride fell off the pace in short order though handing the lead to Wallin who quickly built a cushion over her rival competitor Chance in second.
Chance tried to reel Wallin in but came up short as the leader held on for her third feature win of the 2010 campaign as she sliced into Chance’s points lead.
McBride held on for third as Laura Siarkiewicz came home fourth while Pamela Toepher rounded out the top five in fifth.
Deanna Chandler zoomed into the early lead for the 10-lap INEX Bandoleros main event. Defending champion Cory Cootware immediately closed up to her bumper before the two made contact in turn two to bring out the caution with seven laps remaining.
Morgan Melichar inherited the lead when the restart came and paced the field for a lap before Chandler regained the top spot in turn two using the low line to grab the lead. With four laps remaining, Chandler lost control in the middle of turns one and two spinning out and handing the lead over to Cootware.
From there, Cootware knew what to do as he cruised over the last three laps and collected his fourth feature victory of the season.
Melichar snagged second as Chandler took third.
Rachael Pinkerman grabbed the lead when the green waved on the 10-lap INEX Legends main event. Pinkerman, who became the first female to win a championship outside of a womens-only division last season in the legends, held off Cory Cootware’s attempt to close for her second consecutive feature win.
After Pinkerman went wire-to-wire for victory, Cootware settled for second as Brandon Heisler finished in third.
Dave Lumsdun Jr. grabbed the early lead in the 10-lap National Figure 8 League main event as Figure 8 ringer Tom Schneider chased him down in hot pursuit.
The caution flew when points leader Dennis Smith Jr. gave Schneider the hook and sent him spinning. Schneider got his second place position back as Smith Jr. dropped back to fourth on the restart.
Schneider took advantage of his second chance to grab the lead working around Lumsdun Jr. on the inside as Dennis Smith Jr. followed suit into second.
The final five laps were Schneider’s as he cruised to the win, his second of the season.
Smith Jr. settled for second as Lumsdun Jr. collected third.
Steve McBride jumped out to an early lead in the Yellowbook Hornet Challenge Backwards/Forwards Race. The race consisted of six laps around the quarter-mile, four in normal fashion and two in reverse. McBride led the field to the backwards portion of the race as Bobby Yonkee grabbed second and closed up to McBride’s bumper. As the white flag waved, Yonkee created a reversal of fortune, zooming past McBride going backwards and taking the win.
Tim Beard won the Shriner’s 5-lap feature race.
