Loves Park, IL (August 8, 2010) Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Model veteran Tom Gille showed he may not be a weekly regular, but he can sure get the job done. Gille took the lead on the first lap and stayed there for the entire 30 lap feature.
With Tom Gille in the lead, points leader Tim Sargent was making a move on fourth place Eddie May, successfully making the pass. Jerry Gille also passed May for fifth place and then began battling Sargent for fourth with 22 laps to go, Gille successfully passed Sarget for fourth.
With 19 laps to go Gille began the battle to pass the third place car of Brandon Eash, when the 93 of John Beinlich hit the wall on the back stretch and brought out a caution. Jerry Gille had problems with his machine on the restart and pulled off into the pits.
After Tom Gille took the green flag Steve Rubeck began looking on the inside of Tim Sargent for third, Sargent was able to hold him off. The battle continued for many laps to come, allowing Driver X Jon Reynolds Jr. to catch up. As the X caught up to fourth place Rubeck, the 20 backed off and Reynolds successfully made the pass for fourth.
Tom Gille was able to get around lap traffic unscathed and took the checkered flag with Ryan Carlson in second, Sargent in third, Reynolds in fourth and Rubeck rounding out the top five.
Bargain Hunter Sportsman rookie Austin Nason made his first trip to victory lane on Figure 8 Tralier Race night. The young driver from Roscoe took the lead five laps into the feature and stayed there for twenty more laps.
Wrecks seemed to plague the drivers behind Nason with ten laps complete Matt Lundberg driver of the “Family Truckster” station wagon had problems, sparks flew as something broke on Lundberg’s machine, sending him sprawling through the grass in turn one. Matt Doris spun in turn four with 12 laps to go bringing out another caution.
Nason was able to secure the win, with Doug Bennett in second, Matt Berger in third, Ron Morris in fourth and Rob Goodman in fifth.
Fans were thrilled to see the return of George and Rachel Sparkman to the historic high banks for the Budweiser American Short Tracker Feature. Rachel started out on the front row, David Russell quickly pulled to the lead and the younger Sparkman fell back to fourth. George Sparkman had trouble in turn two hitting the wall, sending the senior Sparkman into the pits.
Lap six brought out some excitement as Mark Bielefeldt spun, and Scott Hoeft pulled to the infield with a fire under his car. Hoeft was able to pull back on to track, flame free and was out front with Russell.
Jason Bragg spun in turn two taking Keith Pierce with him leaving George Sparkman nowhere to go but into the wreck. Rachel Sparkman latter had trouble as she spun coming into turn three and hitting the point. Sparks flew as Jack Atchison hit the wall on the front stretch with 15 to go.
With ten to go Hoeft moved up the track and took Russell with him into the wall bringing out a caution. Both Hoeft and Russell were battling for the lead, with them out of the running Nick Cina Jr. took the lead and won the race, Cina attributed the win to being lucky, and opined “I’d rather be lucky than good every day of the week”.
The Mtn Dew RoadRunner Feature started out crazy and kept going from there. Lap one saw several drivers eager to get to the front, Adam Cartwright went sprawling across the grass on the back stretch, and Jason Brockway took the lead, Josh Lundy spun on the front stretch, and was able to recover.
Chargin’ Charlie Frisch and Dana Zippity Czach battled neck and neck for second place, Czach was able to hold Frisch off. Brockway, Czach and Frisch fought fiercely for their top three positions; several attempts to get around each other were made. On the last lap as drivers in the top three positions looked to have a good night, Czach was spun in turn one by a lapped car. The upset was just enough to get Chargin’ Charlie to the lead, with Brockway finishing in fourth, Howie Ware and Robert Roush popping into the top three, finishing second and third.
The World Famous Figure 8 Trailer Race once again thrilled fans as mayhem and destruction reigned. Tires littered the track, a hot tub made its home in turn 1 and a van flipped onto its side in turn two. The turn over brought out a caution so officials could check on the condition of the driver. The driver of the van was unharmed and popped out the overturned vehicle arms pumping. Another caution was brought out as a fire erupted out of one of the partially destroyed vehicles. The carnage continued until only two vehicles remained the 35 of Mark Wiese and the 70 of Mark Maday. The winner was decided by a fan vote, Maday won hands down.
