Carlson Clings to Opening Night Victory as 45th NSTC's Get Underway at Rockford

By Jordan Kuehne

LOVES PARK, Ill. (Friday, October 1st, 2010) – Etching your names in the history books is no easy task as Ryan Carlson rediscovered on his march to victory lane Friday night during the commencement of the 45th annual National Short Track Championships at the legendary Rockford Speedway. The veteran set a lightning quick fast time during Nason’s Landscaping ‘Faster Than a Speeding Bullet’ qualifying before quickly setting sail in the feature and working his way to the front of the Weekly Warriors Late Model ‘Stanley Steemer 45’ field. A move to the front allowed Carlson to breathe easy albeit not for long as regular season champion Tim Sargent gave chase and gave the hot shoe everything he could handle. Carlson slammed the door shut though, collecting his fourth career NSTC triumph.

Matt Berger zoomed to the front in the All-American ‘Metro Medical 40’ after setting a track record during qualifying, claiming the checkers while George Sparkman snagged a victory in the American Short Trackers ‘Gilley’s Heating & Cooling 40’. Kris Nilson’s late charge enabled him to taste the glory of an NSTC triumph for the first time as he blew past Terrance Robinson with two laps left to prevail in the RoadRunners ‘Marden Tire & Auto Service 40’. The return of the National Figure 8 League to NSTC’s saw ringer Dennis Smith Jr. climb to the top in the ‘Ferrellgas 15’ while Brad Chandler survived a plethora of lapped cars to ensure victory in the Hornet/Bandit Challenge ‘Stateline Staffing Services 25’.

Matt Berger jumped out front when the green flag waved on the main event of the Friday night program at the 45th annual National Short Track Championships. The Weekly Warrior Late Models ‘Stanley Steemer 45’ had action all over the place over the opening ten laps as ‘Fast’ Eddie May negotiated his way up to second on lap three.

Michael Bilderback fought a loose hot rod as he fended off Tony Bagstad for third. Out front, May sliced into Berger’s early cushion and set up a pass for the lead at the same time the Bagstad dove to the bottom of Bilderback for third. May got a run on the inside of Berger for the lead with 30 laps to go before the two touched on the exit of turn four allowing Berger to escape with the lead.

Leaving nothing on the table, May worked his way back to Berger’s bumper when the caution flew with 27 circuits remaining for a spin by Michael Bilderback. The field exhibited their driving skills avoiding Bilderback’s machine when it shot back up onto the racing surface in the middle of turn one.

On the restart, Berger took advantage of fast qualifier Ryan Carlson’s duel with May to build a solid margin. Carlson wasted no time taking second away though and it wasn’t long before the former NSTC winner had tracked down Berger for the top spot. 2010 Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models champ Tim Sargent joined the fray up front after a deft maneuver allowed him to take third.

With 19 laps to go, the second caution flew for a Jake Gille spin in turn one. Johnny Baumeister Jr. had nowhere to go in the aftermath, smashing into the rear end of Gille’s machine and suffering another tough ending just one week after totaling his car in the Big 8 race at Madison International Speedway. Bobby Wilberg took his machine to the pits as the green flag waved.

Berger charged back to the lead when racing resumed as Carlson shook off a brief offering from Sargent before going inside of Berger to take away the lead. When Matt Berger got loose, Sargent pounced, jumping up to second and never letting off the gas as he glued himself to Carlson’s rear bumper with ten laps remaining.

Sargent continued to look for an opening for the lead as the laps wound down. The opening finally came with five laps to go as Sargent got on the inside of Carlson with four laps to go before ‘RC’ slammed the door shut. Behind the leaders, May challenged Berger for third but the action was intensifying up front.

With the white flag in the air, Sargent tried one last time to take the inside line to victory but fell one car length short as Ryan Carlson fended off all comers to collect both big trophies on the evening. After taking home the ‘Bullet’ trophy for being the Nason’s Landscaping fast qualifier, Carlson added his fourth National Short Track Championship to his hardware collection.

“I could win 50 and they would all still be huge,” admitted a humble Carlson after his triumph. “You get your name on the board with Dick Trickle and Mark Martin. There are so many great names up there so to have another one (of mine) up there is cool.”

After a stellar 2010 run to the title, Sargent came up just short in second. Berger settled for third to cap off a great evening for the flexible veteran as May managed a solid fourth. Wayne Freimund rounded out the top five in fifth.

Rob Goodman snuck out front as the All-American Sportsman kicked off the 45th annual National Short Track Championships feature events with the ‘Metro Medical 40’. A feature winner on the year at the high banked oval, Goodman paced the 22 car field the opening five laps until the caution flew for an Austin Nason spin in turn one.

Goodman grabbed the top spot when the green flag waved as the Scott Lawver and Brian Johnson Sr. tangled for third. Johnson Sr. propelled himself into the top three on the high line as new track record holder Matt Berger worked around the veteran Lawver on the outside. The 2010 season champion, Berger wasn’t done, navigating around the speed plant on the inside line and using the whole track to clear Johnson Sr. for third.

With the leader still out front by a couple car lengths, Behnke came under fire from the fast qualifier as Berger’s mission for a National Short Track Championship victory continued. As the halfway mark passed, Berger snagged the second spot and immediately targeted Goodman and the lead. Using the bottom of the speedway, Berger maneuvered into the lead and broke away from the pack behind him.

A few laps after surrendering the lead, Goodman washed up the racetrack and dropped to fifth as former champion Doug Bennett negotiated his way into the front pack in fourth. ‘Captain’ Chris Gantz piloted his machine into second as Behnke fell into the clutches of Bennett for third. The real action was for fifth as John Paul Odegaard muscled past Johnson Sr. using every bit of the track and not shying away from contact as Lawver and Goodman hungrily watched behind them.

The 45-lap feature turned into a six lap shootout when Justin Sellers and Steve Vaughn made contact on the backstretch sending Sellers around and bunching the field back up. On the ensuing restart, Berger busted back to the lead as Gantz edged into second. Lawver and Odegaard dueled for fifth as Bobby Wilberg closed up in his classic Barracuda.

The finish was like something out of Hollywood as the leaders exited turn four with smoke pluming through the air and cars spinning. It didn’t stop a hungry Berger though as the season champion continued his 2010 campaign of dominance at the quarter-mile with a victory in the ‘Metro Medical 40’, topping off his story book season as an NSTC victor.

Gantz garnered a stellar runner-up finish as Behnke held onto third. Bennett found his way through the field to grab fourth while John Paul Odegaard finished off the top five in fifth.

The American Short Trackers ‘Gilley’s Heating & Cooling 40’ got off to a fast start as Gary Stark assumed command of the 20 car field in the early stages. Nick Cina Jr. and Keith Pierce battled for the bridesmaid’s position in the opening laps before Pierce grabbed second and George Sparkman followed suit moving up to third.

Keith Pierce inherited the lead with seven laps in the books when Stark slowed on the frontstretch and exited to the pits with mechanical gremlins in his machine. Sparkman moved up to second but wasn’t satisfied, going door-to-door with Pierce for the lead before making a decisive move to jump to the top of the totem pole. Sparkman’s blistering pace was matched by Cina Jr. as he looked to track down the leader.

Zach Rodriguez almost saw his night end early when his machine broke loose in the middle of turns three and four with 17 laps complete, succumbing to BJ Sparkman for third as Scott Hoeft matched him to take fourth. The Sparkmans assumed control of the top two spots when Cina Jr. pulled into the infield with issues under the hood of his car.

Four-time champion George Sparkman eased away from the field out front as BJ Sparkman began to feel the heat from Hoeft for second. The race got a lot more interesting when the caution flew with 11 laps to go for an incident on the backstretch involving Chris Jones and Phil Malouf as the two got hooked together sending Jones careening into the backstretch wall and ending his night early.

George Sparkman pulled the strings on the restart leading the field back to green as his brother BJ attempted to close up and challenge him for the win. The battle for third warmed up with seven circuits remaining as Zach Rodriguez and Scott Hoeft went at it. Hoeft took the spot when Rodriguez lost his hood on the backstretch before losing the grip on his ride, slipping back to seventh in a flash.

The leader still held the top spot comfortably as BJ Sparkman made one last gasp effort for victory, falling short and handing the win to his brother George. An experienced veteran who knows his way around the quarter-mile, Sparkman collected his third career NSTC victory in convincing fashion.

Scott Hoeft took home third as Keith Pierce and regular season champ Kyle Lapier completed the top five in fourth and fifth respectively.

The RoadRunners ‘Marden Tire & Auto Service 40’ was tightly contested from the beginning as Jeff Allendorf edged out to a slim lead over Anthony Vito while cars battled all over the paved oval. Vito lost his spot in the duel up front as Anthony Lloyd replaced him, moving to the inside of Allendorf as he looked for the lead.

A battle for third commenced between Vito and Jason Brockway as the lead pack blanketed themselves around the speedway. Lloyd took the lead with ten laps in the books as Allendorf quickly fell to third, as Brockway worked his way up to second. Brockway and Lloyd were soon side-by-side up front jousting for the lead a full fifteen car lengths ahead of a large pack from third through tenth.

Brockway nosed ahead at the halfway point as Lloyd settled into second. Terrance Robinson maneuvered through the field behind the leaders, taking third as fast qualifier Dana ‘Zippity’ Czach forced his way up to fourth. The first caution of the race flew for a Dave Lumsdun spin in turn two tightening the field back up with 19 laps remaining.

Brockway broke free again on the restart as Robinson rocketed into second. Lloyd dropped to fifth allowing Czach to push his way up to third. The fast qualifier wanted more though, pulling alongside Robinson for the second position. A second caution fell for a solo trip through the spin cycle by Mike Doris on the frontstretch, allowing a fast Robinson to close up to Brockway’s bumper.

Robinson had a solid restart as Brockway immediately felt the pressure behind him. The two veterans went door-to-door for the lead before Robinson prevailed as Kris Nilson came out of nowhere to challenge for the win. Using every inch of the bottom groove, Nilson cleared Robinson with two laps left. Czach and Robinson leaned on each other for second with the white flag in the air.

Nilson worked hard to beat everyone to the finish line, taking the checkers to claim his first career National Short Track Championship while Czach edged Robinson to the line for the runner-up spot.

The Hornet/Bandit Challenge ‘Stateline Staffing Services 25’ got off to a swift start as Mark ‘the Missile’ Sontag Jr. didn’t waste a moment slicing and dicing through the field, working his way from a sixth place starting spot into the lead in just one lap. The Shorewood, Illinois driver looked to successfully defend his 2009 NSTC victory but Brad Chandler wasn’t giving up that easily.

The Iowa driver who laid down a blistering lap to set fast time earlier in the evening managed to erase Sontag Jr’s entire lead by the halfway point before setting up a pass for the top spot. Chandler’s efforts paid off when Sontag Jr. pulled off to the pits allowing the fast qualifier to inherit the lead.

Chandler hit his marks and negotiated through a crush of lapped traffic to find his way to victory lane, pulling off the sweep after setting fast time and taking home the NSTC trophy.

Making their return to the pageantry and tradition that is National Short Track Championship weekend, the National Figure 8 League took to the Rockford Speedway’s X in the infield that was built just for them several years ago. The ‘Ferrellgas 15’ got underway with Curt Nighswonger out front.

Brian Mayer gave chase while Figure 8 ringers Dennis Smith Jr. and Tom Schneider lingered in the middle of the pack. Dirt tracking it through the infield, Hawkins succumbed to Smith Jr. for third as the leaders went three-wide for the top spot. Mayer climbed to the top as Nighswonger relinquished the top spot and dropped to fifth.

Smith Jr’s Figure 8 prowess shone through when ‘DJ’ worked the inside line to take away the lead from Mayer. The battle for second intensified as Hawkins, Schneider, and Mayer knocked each other around for the spot. Schneider took away the bridesmaid’s position as Smith Jr. almost t-boned Mayer in the middle of the ‘X’.

‘DJ’ took the final checkered flag on the first night of NSTC’s as the National Figure 8 League made an amazing return that left fans on their feet bellowing their approval. It was Smith Jr’s first National Short Track Championship triumph, helping make up for a crushing second place finish in the season point standings to Schneider.

Settling for second, Schneider held on while Josh Thiering tagged along for third.
