LOVES PARK, Ill. (Saturday, October 2nd, 2010) – Two is indeed a magical number and Jon Reynolds Jr. proved it in dominating fashion tonight during the 45th National Short Track Championships at the Rockford Speedway. On the second night of competition of the three day racing extravaganza, Reynolds Jr. drove to his second Big 8 Series presented by Gandrud Chevrolet win of 2010, leading the final 90 laps of the ‘Hinckley Springs 108’ to take the checkers ahead of the second place Big 8 points man, James Swan, by a straightaway.
‘Driver X’ exploded to the lead in the early stages but it takes two to tango as Bobby Wilberg played the role of foil for Reynolds Jr. It was only after an incident involving Wilberg on a restart that Reynolds Jr. was able to escape from the 23 car field untouched, claiming his second career National Short Track Championship triumph. Big 8 Series points leader Jeremy Miller was running fifth when his rear end broke, ending the two-time Big 8 Series champ’s night on lap 46. Swan’s second place finish suddenly makes the Big 8 Series points chase a lot more interesting heading into the final race of the season next weekend during Oktoberfest at Lacrosse Fairgrounds Speedway.
Former champ Brock Behnke found victory lane in the Area Sportsman ‘Sam’s Drive-In 50’ after fending off a late race charge from a hungry Chris Gantz. Jim Tate Jr’s name will be etched in the Rockford Speedway history books after claiming the Hobby Stox ‘Cevene Care Clinic 40’, surviving Terrance Robinson’s best efforts to rally for a win. The debut of the Illini Midgets at NSTC’s saw Tyler Trainer take an early lead and hold on late to find the winner’s circle in the ‘Bobcat of Rockford 50’.
With the final day of the 45th annual NSTC’s on tap tomorrow, Brian Johnson Jr. laid down a blistering lap during Nason’s Landscaping ‘Faster Than a Speeding Bullet’ qualifying to break the Super Late Models track record and set fast time for tomorrow’s ‘Budweiser 200’. It will be Brett Sontag and Jerry Gille on the front row for the showcase event of NSTC’s though, after the two Illinois hot shoes steered their way into victory lane during Odd/Even dashes that helped set the feature lineup.
Jon Reynolds Jr. exploded to the front as the Saturday night main event got underway at the 45th annual National Short Track Championships. ‘Driver X’ commanded the top spot in the early stages of the Big 8 Series presented by Gandrud Chevrolet ‘Hinckley Springs 108’ as Bobby Wilberg settled into second behind him.
James Swan, who entered the night second in series points, rode around in third as the first caution of the event flew with nine laps completed for a Tim Sargent spin on the frontstretch. Michael Bilderback dropped to the back of the 23 car field for his role in the incident.
Wilberg wasted no time making his move for the lead, using the restart to his advantage as Reynolds Jr. relinquished the top spot one lap later. Behind the leaders, Kyle Shear looked to the inside of ‘Fast’ Eddie May for third as Swan eagerly waited in fifth. Shear couldn’t get the traction necessary on the bottom groove and was soon relegated to fifth as Swan got one spot back.
A second caution flew for a solo spin by Ed Szelagowski Jr. in turn two bringing the proceedings to a halt with 90 laps left. Reynolds Jr. got a modicum of revenge on the restart when he squeezed Wilberg up the racing surface to retake the lead and jump back out front.
Points leader Jeremy Miller moved up to fourth as Swan rejoined the top three with a move on Eddie May for third. The top four cars soon settled down and went single file as fast qualifier Tom Gille eyed the top five, moving up to fifth with a maneuver to the inside of Kyle Shear.
Gille’s march continued as he closed up and overtook Miller for fourth as the leaders closed up on lapped traffic. Just when it seemed as though Miller’s run for a third Big 8 Series title was all but locked up, the points leader suffered rear end issues on his Ford Fusion with 62 laps remaining, spinning through the infield grass as his night came to a premature end. With Miller out of the running, Swan and Wilberg’s prospects for a championship suddenly looked a lot brighter.
The caution allowed Wilberg to close back up to Reynolds Jr’s bumper as the two once again struck up a battle for the lead once the racing action resumed. Mayhem ensued shortly afterwards as Wilberg and Gille made contact setting off a chain reaction incident that collected Sargent, Shear, and May. Shear returned to his spot in third as Wilberg and Gille dropped to the back of the pack for their role in the mishap.
Shear spun out on the restart after he flat spotted his right rear tire, handing Slinger regular Chris Blawat third. Reynolds Jr. rolled out to the lead as Screamin’ Wayne Freimund jostled with Blawat for third. Freimund took the spot as Swan put the heat on Reynolds Jr. out front at the halfway mark.
Tom Gille was a man on the mission behind the leaders, commencing a second charge through the field with passes of Jimmy Ganski and Jacob Vanosky to move up to sixth. Way ahead of the battles back in the pack, Reynolds Jr. eased out to an eight car length lead on Swan. Gille’s charge ended when Wilberg positioned himself on the inside and took away the sixth spot from the fast qualifier.
With just under 20 laps remaining, Gille continued to work over Whitten for fifth as Reynolds Jr. negotiated lapped traffic. The race couldn’t be complete without one more duel between Wilberg and Gille as the two wily veterans tangled with five laps left for sixth.
Out front, it was all ‘Driver X’ though, as Jon Reynolds Jr. led the final 90 laps to become a National Short Track Champion for the second time in his career. A winner in 2008, Reynolds Jr. notched his second Big 8 Series presented by Gandrud Chevrolet victory this season, crossing the finish line a full straightaway ahead of James Swan.
“The car was junk Thursday and yesterday,” Reynolds Jr. admitted in victory lane. “We kinda wanted to just park this car and focus on the super late but my crew busted their butts the last couple nights to get this car in good shape tonight. I can’t say enough about these Hoosier tires and the way they hold up over a long run. The grip just never left the car.”
Swan’s stellar second place effort continued his run of consistency in 2010 as the Lake Geneva, Wisconsin hot shoe combined his solid finish with Jeremy Miller’s troubles to slice into the points leader’s margin. Wayne Freimund finally had some breaks go his way as the Rockford Speedway regular garnered a top three with a third place finish. Slinger regular Chris Blawat recorded a top five, coming home fourth as Tanner Whitten rounded out the top five in fifth.
The action was fast and furious in the beginning stages of the Area Sportsman ‘Sam’s Drive-In 50’ as the racing was only one lap old before Steve Vaughn and Rob Goodman made hard contact on the frontstretch ending both driver’s nights prematurely.
When the racing excitement got underway in earnest, it was former track champion Brock Behnke that jumped to the lead as a second caution flew for a chain reaction pileup that ensnared nine cars and thinned out the 21 car field quickly when Rick Coppernoll and John Paul Odegaard got hooked together in front of the majority of the field, leaving many drivers no place to go. Five cars made it back to the track in time for the final 49 laps.
On the restart, Behnke broke free out front as Brian Johnson Sr. settled into second. ‘Captain’ Chris Gantz and Matt Lundberg gave chase for second as Johnson Sr. fell into their clutches. Gantz cleared Johnson Sr. for the runner-up spot with ten laps in the books as Lundberg tried to follow suit on the outside of the high banked oval.
Johnson Sr. continued to slip back as Doug Bennett snuck past him on the outside to find his way to fourth. With the halfway mark coming and going, Behnke continued to set the pace as Gantz inched closer to his back bumper with each passing lap.
With the laps remaining in the single digits, Lundberg peeked to the inside of Gantz for second as the top three cars ran in close proximity. Lundberg and Gantz made contact on the backstretch with seven laps to go allowing Behnke to put a cushion between himself and his challengers.
Gantz gave his best effort trying to close on Behnke and give him a last lap worry but he fell short as the former track champion became a National Short Track Champion for the first time going wire-to-wire to take down the hardware and earn his place in history.
Lundberg landed himself a top three in third while Austin Nason recovered from his role in the lap two incident to garner a fourth place finish. Scott Lawver completed the top five with a fifth place effort.
The Illini Midgets made their debut at the National Short Track Championships with the ‘Bobcat of Rockford 50’ as the quarter-mile that was originally created in 1948 specifically for them played host to open wheeled racing during its biggest weekend of the year.
Aaron Willis worked his way to the early lead in the 50-lap headliner as Tyler Trainer swiftly navigated to second by lap five. Trainer wasted no time taking away the top spot on lap six as fast qualifier Tyler Deschaine blew through the field into the bridemaid’s position.
Allen Gillis had just taken third away from local driver Derrick Gough when the caution flew with 31 laps to go for a Loran Critchett trek through the spin cycle in turn two. The top two drivers drove away from the field on the restart as Trainer continued to cruise out front.
Deschaine looked to reel in Trainer with 20 circuits remaining as he set up a pass for the lead. Gillis managed to close up behind the top two as they sized each other up, inserting himself into the fray out front.
Trainer slowly picked off lapped traffic while Deschaine looked for an opportunity to close. His chance came when Trainer got stuck behind a pair of lapped cars as Deschaine closed right up to Trainer’s back bumper with three laps left, looking for one last gasp effort for a victory.
It wasn’t enough however as young Tyler Trainer had just enough at the end, holding off Deschaine’s late race charge to collect his second feature win of the season at Rockford as he claimed the first ever Illini Midgets NSTC crown.
Deschaine dusted himself off and took second as Gillis registered a solid third. Derrick Gough rallied his way through the field late for fourth while Aaron Willis held on to finish fifth.
Fresh off a win in the National Figure 8 League Friday night, Dennis Smith Jr. found himself out front once again as the Hobby Stox ‘Cevene Care Clinic 40’ took the green flag. Smith Jr. wasn’t alone out front as Brad Warthan applied the pressure on lap nine, gaining the inside line and looking to snatch the lead.
After a caution for Josh Carter’s expired motor with 31 laps remaining, ‘Bad’ Brad Warthan beat Smith Jr. into turn one on the restart as Jim Tate Jr. trailed in hot pursuit looking for a chance to steal the lead. Rather than wait around, Tate Jr. tried to make it happen on his own, diving to the bottom of the oval and going side-by-side with Warthan for the top spot.
Tate Jr. inherited the top spot after Warthan played pinball with the frontstretch wall, allowing Terrance Robinson and Eric Schoffen to move up to second and third. Robinson got the chance to close up to Tate Jr’s rear bumper when a second caution flew for Lloyd Hawkin’s blown motor with 16 circuits to go.
On the restart, Tate Jr. pushed his way back to the top spot as fast qualifier Dana Czach continued his move from the back climbing up to third with ten laps to go. The leader stretched his margin to eight car lengths as Robinson and Czach attempted to cut into his cushion.
Robinson shook off Czach’s charge for second as he chopped into Tate Jr’s margin with the laps winding down. While Robinson cut the deficit down to just a car length, his late race dash for the win simply ran out of time as Jim Tate Jr. took the checkers in the nick of time, earning himself a place in the history books as an NSTC winner.
Czach came home in third as Schoffen sidled his way into fourth. Warthan held on to fifth to complete the top five.
On tap for tomorrow is the final day of the 45th edition of NSTC's. A scintillating lineup headlined by the Super Late Models and the crowning of the next 'National Short Track Champion' awaits for fans as 30 wheelmen from across the Midwest will look to wear the wreath in the Budweiser 200. Some of the stars already locked into this year's legendary event include 3-time NSTC champ 'Fast' Eddie Hoffman, as well as veteran Chris Wimmer, Rockford regular Jon Reynolds Jr, former ASA Midwest champion Nathan Haseleu, and fast qualifier and new track record holder Brian Johnson Jr.
The Mid-American Stock Car Series will also be in action as their season winds down and their points battle heats up with a lot on the line in the Mtn Dew 75. MASCS qualifying will get the day started at 11:15am with the green flag waving on the storied event at 12:30pm. Spectator gates will open at 10am with a fan autograph session scheduled for 11:30am in the Bud Pavilion.
