Shutkas Shows Patience, Soars Into Victory Lane at the Bahama Bracket Nationals

By Jordan Kuehne

LOVES PARK, Ill. (Sunday, October 17th, 2010) – Patience is a virtue and Nick Shutkas rode it all the way to victory Sunday, taking home the main event at the Rockford Speedway’s 19th annual Bahama Bracket Nationals, surviving a caution-plagued ‘A’ Bracket 50-lap feature and holding off a hard-charging James Swan to find the winner's circle.

Shutkas worked his way to the front slowly, taking his time as the local veteran methodically picked off cars before overtaking John Paul Odegaard with 16 laps remaining. His work wasn't done though as Shutkas still had to find a way to fend off Swan over the final ten laps as numerous restarts bunched the field back up, but in the end he had enough to grab the TIKI Torch trophy and the cash and head home with his name in the record books. In a heated ‘AA’ showcase, Billy Rud endured a late race rally from Landry Potter to come home victorious and notch a nice payday. Rud took over the race, inheriting the lead when Scott Lawver suffered the dreaded breakout up front.

Rick Wilson went side-by-side with Bob Moeller for ten laps before ending up in the winner’s circle in the ‘AAA’ Bracket while Bill Bush grabbed the ‘AAAA’ win after the original victor, Brad Norgard, broke out on the final lap. In the debut of 4-cylinder brackets at the Bahamas, Kyle Lapier grabbed the top prize in the ‘B’ Bracket headliner. Iowa driver Bryce Bailey made it two in a row, grabbing a second consecutive Bahama Brackets win in the ‘BB’ division and declaring the trip for two to the Bahamas his choice in victory lane.

The showcase event of the 2010 Bahama Bracket Nationals got off to a fast start as the 50-lap ‘A’ Bracket feature saw its first two leaders, Dirt Late Model wheelman Ed Williams Jr. and Sportsman driver Dave Pelak, break out and head to the pits. After an early caution slowed things down on lap five, Tom Prim took over the lead and paced the field back to green.

Defending Bahama Bracket Champion John Paul Odegaard dove to the bottom two laps after the racing resumed looking for the lead. The Minnesota hotshoe nabbed the top spot with 42 laps remaining as local Late Model driver Nick Shutkas moved into second. Prim got hung out to dry up high, dropping several spots before pulling to the infield with mechanical issues.

Mark ‘Plugger’ Pluer made it a three car fray out front, taking the bridesmaid’s position away from Shutkas right before the second caution of the race flew for a Kyle Shear spin on the backstretch. Shear, who had worked his way from the back of the pack up to sixth, was relegated to the rear with 31 circuits left.

On the ensuing restart, Odegaard and Pluer broke away from the field as Shutkas and Danny Church attempted to close up behind them. Shutkas managed to do just that, working the bottom groove and digging deep to take away second. The local veteran wanted more however, working over Odegaard for the lead before finally tasting the top spot with 16 laps remaining.

The newfound leader slowly eased away from the battle for second as Odegaard tried to fend off a hungry Pluer in second. The two made contact with 11 laps remaining, sending Pluer flipping down the backstretch as Odegaard’s mangled open wheeled modified came to a rest with smoke billowing from the front end. Both drivers were able to walk away from the incident without major injuries.

After a short red flag period to clean up the mayhem, Shutkas shot out front to a comfortable cushion as fast qualifier James Swan bumped his way into second. Another yellow flew for contact involving Kyle Shear and Michael Lange. Shear saw his day end on the hook as Lange rejoined the race at the rear of the field.

Swan soared back into second on the restart as Daryl Gerke threw his hot rod into the top three, taking away third from Danny Church. Young Austin Nason relegated Church to fifth as he continued his charge, maneuvering into fourth.

Up front, Swan gave Shutkas everything he had, throwing his car as deep as he could in the corners but it just wasn’t enough as the versatile wheelman ended up a few feet short. Nick Shutkas soared into victory lane, collecting the biggest win of his career in the process. After the win, Shutkas opted to take home the $1500 first prize passing on the trip to the Bahamas.

“That was fun,” Shutkas smiled after getting out of his hot rod. “I was just following a few cars there to get to the front and I was trying to get up there. Patience is key though, and racing James (Swan) was great at the end there.”

Swan settled for second as Gerke garnered a solid third place effort. Young Austin Nason continued to show his growth, finishing fourth while Church rounded out the top five in fifth.

The early lead in the ‘AA’ Bracket 50-lap headliner went to wily veteran Gilbert Brewer as 26 cars stretched across the paved oval. The action was fast and furious in the beginning stages of the event as two early cautions slowed the proceedings.

When the race finally got rolling, Brewer slipped away from the pack as the action behind the leaders heated up. Eddie Wolf and Jim Hanson went at it for fourth as Brewer fell back into the clutches of David Ballstaedt, surrendering the lead on lap ten. ‘Bullet’ Bobby Frisch made it three-wide for third, diving underneath Jim Hanson and Scott Lawver to take the spot as Wolf and Landry Potter dropped out of the top five.

A caution for a spin in turn three bunched the field back up with 11 laps in the books. The ensuing restart went Ballstaedt’s way, allowing the Sportsman driver to get away from his challengers as Frisch made his move for second.

Frisch immediately put the clamps on Ballstaedt out front, peeking on the inside of the leader for the top spot as Lawver made it three-wide, driving past a gaggle of cars to work his way into third. Lawver wasn’t done yet, making a bold move to the bottom to pass Ballstaedt and Frisch in the same turn and snag the top spot. Frisch got past a slumping Ballstaedt as Al Stippich maneuvered his way into the top three in third.

Stippich took a stab at second as the halfway mark came and went, negotiating his way into the bridesmaid’s position as Billy Rud followed him into third. Rud got sent on an offroad expedition through the infield with 18 laps to go, costing him two spots before he got back on track in fifth. Gilbert Brewer’s runaway tire brought out another caution two laps later, bunching the field back up and eviscerating Lawver’s lead.

Rud rocketed into second on the restart but became the leader when Lawver fell victim to the dreaded breakout, ending his run at another Bahama Brackets victory. Rud held steady out front as Potter and Frisch moved into the top three. With the white flag in the air, Potter made one last effort to close up but came up short as Rud took home the victory. The winner decided to pass on the trip to the Bahamas and took the cash to go with a nice trophy for his hardware collection.

“That was hard racing out there,” Rud offered in the winner’s circle. “That was a workout right there with the overheating problem. I got sent through the infield for a moment there racing Stippich and I wasn’t sure if I was going to get back up there. It feels good to get back up there and win.”

Potter plodded his way to a runner-up finish as ‘Bullet’ Bobby Frisch hung on for a podium position in third. Eddie Wolf worked his way to a fourth place effort while Indiana driver Rita Fields completed the top five in fifth.

Kevin Gress grabbed the top spot when the green flag waved on the ‘AAA’ Bracket 50-lap main event. Herb Moag and Pat Ligue dueled for second behind the leader as the laps ticked off rapidly.

Craig Mertes threw his hat in the ring on lap ten, pushing past Ligue and Moag for the runner-up spot as Dana Czach Jr. followed suit, moving up to third. Mertes took the top spot away on lap 17 with Dana ‘Big Kid’ Czach shuffling Gress back to third, inserting himself into second.

The caution flew with 20 laps completed for a Moag spin on the frontstretch. Mertes and Czach wasted no time escaping from the pack as 2009 Bahama Brackets champion Gary Kasperek entered the picture in third.

With 23 laps to go, Czach broke out allowing Kasperek to inherit second as a flurry of action changed the dynamic of the event. Two laps after Czach succumbed to the timing clock, Mertes lost the lead and saw his day end early after his right front tire came off on the frontstretch.

Rick Wilson was suddenly thrust into the lead as Kasperek moved back up to second. The restart with 20 laps to go allowed Wilson to regain the lead as Kasperek pressured Wilson with the assistance of the bottom groove. Kasperek slipped up exiting turn two with ten laps remaining, allowing Bob Moeller to take away the spot and challenge Wilson for the win.

Side-by-side up front with the laps winding down, Moeller maintained his presence on the bottom groove as Wilson stonewalled him on the straightaways. Moeller washed up the track on the final lap, costing himself second and allowing Wilson to escape with his first career Bahama Brackets win. In victory lane, an excited Rick Wilson turned down the trip, proclaiming “cash is king” before embracing his crew.

We were side-by-side there and I knew I couldn’t give up the top side,” Wilson admitted after the race. “I had to keep my car up there on the high side to keep the momentum and try and let (Moeller) struggle on the bottom side and that’s what happened. Qualifying is just so important here and you have to get a good time to have a chance to race how you need to during the features. Good hard racing today and I have to thank my crew for giving me this opportunity.”

Kasperek stole second on the last lap as Moeller’s mistake pushed him back to third. Finishing fourth was Bobbie Jean Wall while Jacob McKown finished off the top five with a hard fought fifth.

Mark Fogel maneuvered his way to the lead when the green flag waved on the 50-lap ‘AAAA’ Bracket championship feature. The 25 car field wasted no time going at it, rubbing and racing all over the high banks before a caution paused the action on lap four.

Fogel found his way back to the lead when racing action resumed as Dave Edwards and Jeff Jeras dueled for second. Jeras settled into second, eyeing the lead as Fogel tried to maintain his margin out front.

Jeras was alongside Fogel battling for the lead when the caution flew with 19 laps completed. On the restart, Brad Norgard burst through the field into the top spot as Jeras settled into second. With 30 laps complete, Jeras surrendered his runner-up spot as Jeras broke out allowing Bill Bush to inherit the second position.

A caution with 15 laps to go allowed Bush to close up to Norgard’s rear bumper and potentially battle for the win. Norgard was having none of it though, working his way back to the top spot as Jimmy Robinson charged through the field and into second with the race swiftly edging towards its finish. Robinson never got a chance to lead though, breaking out with seven laps remaining as Norgard continued to set the pace.

Norgard cruised across the finish line to take the checkers first but ended up sacrificing the win when he broke out on the final lap. An ecstatic Bill Bush inherited the win and opted to take the money as he navigated to victory lane in his first ever trip to the Rockford Speedway.

“This is my first trip here and it’s just great,” Bush noted in the winner’s circle. “My first trip to the Rockford Speedway, my first feature here, and I’m coming back. What a great race that was and it feels awesome to get the win.”

Michael Meyers moved up to second after the late race breakouts while Ed Klug traversed the jam packed field to come home third. David Erickson and Tony Paskiewicz rounded out the top five, coming home fourth and fifth respectively.

Nathan Chandler jumped out front in the first ever 4-cylinder ‘B’ Bracket feature. The 50-lap event was fast and furious in the early stages as positions three through eleven went door-to-door. An early incident involving Rachel Sparkman and Craig Frase brought out the caution on lap four.

Helen Nester stole the lead on the restart, cruising past Chandler on the inside as Rich Hensley made his way up to second. Hensley wheeled his four cylinder into the top spot on lap seven, dive bombing past Nester in turn three and making it stick exiting the corner to take over the lead. Hensley’s quest for the win was halted after he suffered a flat tire, allowing Rockford Speedway track champion Kyle Lapier to inherit the lead with 32 laps remaining.

Lapier launched himself to a solid margin out front as Nester nestled in second. Rachel Sparkman continued to rally through the field after her early race melee, challenging Nester for second before commandeering the position on lap 24. Sparkman turned her sights towards Lapier out front, trying to track down her fellow American Short Tracker competitor to challenge for the win.

Her chase for the win ended with 15 circuits to go after Sparkman’s engine expired just past the start/finish line. After a caution to clean up the fluid on the race track, Lapier continued to pace the field. Phil Malouf used the restart to snag second away from Nester, attempting to put together one final charge for the win.

Lapier continued to hit his marks over the final ten laps though, erasing any opportunity for Malouf to catch him as the regular season champ added a Bahama Brackets victory to his fast growing resume. After taking home the trophy, Lapier decided to take home the cash, eschewing a trip to the Bahamas in favor of the money.

“That was a just awesome,” Lapier stated in front of a large contingent of his fans afterwards. “There was no way we were gonna ever break out there because that was one of the best qualifying times we’ve had all year. First time I’ve raced this event and to get a win is awesome, especially in front of my grandpa.”

Malouf managed a stellar runner-up effort as Helen Nester nabbed third. Brad Chandler and Nathan Chandler represented Iowa well, tallying fourth and fifth place finishes respectively.

Robby Robinson rolled to the front of the 50-lap ‘BB’ Bracket main event. Jason Martin managed to score the second spot, settling into the position as Brandon Vines worked his way into the top three in third.

Devon Dixon sliced and diced past both Martin and Vines in two laps soldiering into second and setting his sights on the leader with third place Bryce Bailey in tow. Dixon caught the leader with 19 laps in the books as he looked for an opening to get by Robinson. The young driver aggressively searched for a way around Robinson for over ten laps before finally trying a move on the high side with 15 laps to go.

Robinson chopped off Dixon’s progress and received the black flag for rough driving after refusing to pick a lane. Bailey took over the lead after Dixon lost momentum out front, but the Rockford Speedway veteran charged back to the front to challenge for the lead. The two leaders helped bring out the caution with nine laps remaining, closing the lead lap cars back up.

Dixon resumed the race out front but didn’t stay there as a determined Bryce Bailey rallied to the top spot and assumed control of the race with six laps to go. After relinquishing the lead, Dixon tried to return the favor but couldn’t do it as Bailey took the checkers and the trophy for the second consecutive year at the Bahama Brackets. The final victor of the day, Bailey insisted upon taking the trip for two to the Bahamas for the second year in a row.

“50 laps is a long race so you have to wait back there a while,” Bailey said after the race. “You work hard to get up there and it takes a little work to get by guys on this track because it’s so tight. It’s key to bide your time and wait for the right opportunity to go for a pass and that’s what I did.”

Dixon took home a tough luck second as Wisconsin native Dave Harvath snagged a top three coming home third. Brandon Condroski and his vocal fan contingent took a fourth place finish back to the Badger State while local driver Jason Martin finished off the top five with a fifth place effort. The furthest traveling driver, Rossville, Georgia’s Tom Gilbert, made the trip worthwhile with his sixth place finish.

The best appearing car went to Cedar Rapids, Iowa’s Malena Betzer.

Racing returns for one last go-around at the Rockford Speedway, ending the 2010 season with a bang as the Goblin 250 makes its return next Sunday afternoon to the high banks. Over 100 cars will take to the quarter-mile oval at once on a quest for victory in the 250-lap enduro. The full slate of action also includes the Darkhorse Fair and Nostalgia Class Demolition Derbies. Kids can get in on the action with the annual Kid’s Costume Contest and a Candy Scramble. All of the exciting action gets underway at 1pm.
