Loves Park, IL- Eddie May shot past Matthew Clossey early on in the Speedway Auto Mall 30 and held off Jon Reynolds, Jr to become the winningest Late Model driver of 2012 at Rockford Speedway as he recorded win number three. Bargain Hunter Sportsman point leader extended his point lead when he took command of the field with just two laps to go, working the inside line beneath Rob Goodman. Former RoadRunner Champion Terrance Robinson was the class of the RockStar Energy RoadRunner field and Klint Egelhoff lost the lead on the final lap as the Crap Scrapper Hornet field raced through the Monza course and into turn three, only to recapture in from Ryan Volkert at the checkered flag. Arlyn Roush avoided the crashes in the one lap Sam’s Drive-In RoadRunner Driver Bike race to collect the winner’s hardware.
Matthew Clossey returned to action after an incident while battling for his first career win last Saturday night ended his night, to his inside was former Lake Geneva Raceway Champion Eddie May who has already posted two wins on the season. The youngster held a slight advantage for the opening two circuits but May hustled on the low line and edged ahead of Clossey a lap later. A caution on lap six restacked the field with Rookie of the Year leader Austin Nason restarting inside Clossey but the caution lights were displayed again as Nason found the turn one wall. When the field returned to racing, May soon had his mirror full of fast qualifier Jon Reynolds, Jr and seven time Champion Ricky Bilderback. Reynolds pulled even with May multiple times attempting to wrestle the lead away from the veteran while Bilderback looked for his chance in the three car breakaway. May held his own and rejected all attempts by Driver X and recorded win three on the season. Bilderback followed Reynolds for third, Jerry Gille rebounded from a brutal practice incident to claim fourth, Clossey wound up fifth and Matt Berger finished sixth after accepting the Gerber Collision Challenge which placed him at the tail of the field for the start.
The opening five laps of the Bargain Hunter Sportsman feature witnessed Butch Swinbank in control of the field as drivers jockeyed behind him. Rob Goodman was the first to make a move on Swinbank when he went low to gain position one on the fifth lap. Swinbank kept Doug Bennett in check through the halfway point which found last week’s winner Justin Sellers up to fourth and Brett McCoy in fifth. Bennett eventually found his way into the runner-up spot and set his sights on Goodman, with two laps to go it was Bennett’s time to shine, using the low line to sneak past Goodman and into Victory Lane. Goodman held onto second over McCoy, Rookie Johnny Robinson was fourth with fast qualifier Daryl Gerke completing the top five.
It appeared to many that recently crowned RoadRunner Super Summer Series Champion Robert Roush would walk away with the RockStar Energy RoadRunner feature but a trio of cautions changed that. Terrance Robinson shot into the lead at the halfway mark and never looked back. Gene Marocco maneuvered to the high side of Roush who eventually fell victim to an ill handling car and fell through the field, to finish second. A fierce battle was fought for the third spot which was eventually topped by point leader Bobby Frisch, Howie Ware and Jason Van Hise completed the top five.
Klint Egelhoff had led from the onset but lost the lead on the final lap as the Crap Scrapper Hornet field raced through the Monza course and into turn three. Ryan Volkert used lapped traffic to move to the front and was feet from victory but would relinquish the lead to Egelhoff as the duo raced to the checkered flag. Point leader Jeremia Rychecky survived to finish third with Jacob Aldrich and Lee Anderson posted top five efforts.
