National Short Track Championships This Friday through Sunday

The 47th annual National Short Track Championships will take place this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Rockford Speedway. The Championship Round of the Gilley’s Cool 5 Series helps kick off ‘One Great Racing Weekend’ as the Weekly Warrior Late Models, Sportsman, American Short Trackers and RoadRunners battle for over $12,000 in point fund money. Also on the card is the Hornet/Bandit Challenge and the Figure 8 Championship. Racing will begin at 7:07 Friday night, Jon Reynolds, Jr holds a slim five point lead in the GC5 Series standings while Derek Dobbs and Dennis Smith, Jr find themselves tied atop the Figure 8 charts.

A 108 lap feature event for the Big 8 Late Model Series highlights Saturday Night’s program which will begin at 5:05. Nason’s Landscaping Faster Than a Speeding Bullet Qualifying gets underway at 2:15. A 50 lap feature for the Sportsman as well as the open wheeled excitement of the Illini Midgets, Illinois Vintage Racing and Hobby Stox will make for an action packed night. The Super Late Models will also contest their preliminary events.

Sunday afternoon will see twenty four of the region’s top Super Late Models come to life for 200 grueling laps. A field full of Champions and Challengers will go door to door to try to find their way into victory lane and wear the victory wreath. The Mid-American Stock Car 75 lap feature will be joined by two events for the weekly late models, the Gerber Collision Challenge and Late Model Showdown Match Races. A fan autograph session is planned in the Miller Lite Pavilion at 11:30am, racing begins at 12:30pm.
