A busy Saturday night is on tap at the Rockford Speedway this weekend. Saturday night is ‘Military Night,’ where free admission is offered to all active and retired military men and women who show their Military ID’s at the ticket gate. On track, it’s the return of the Gilley’s Cool 5 Series. This season, drivers will compete for season long points and added prize money in each of the Gilley’s events. The ‘Saturday Night Super Show’ will include the Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models, Bargain Hunter Sportsman, Miller Lite American Short Trackers and Rockstar Energy Drink Roadrunners. The American Super Cup cars will make their Saturday night return and the Sam’s Drive In 2nd Over the Line Wins race is on the schedule as well. Saturday will also feature the second ‘Dollar Beer Night’ of the season. Spectator gates open at 5pm, qualifying at 5:55pm with the first race at 7:07pm. Adult general admission tickets are $12, students ages 12-17 are $8, kids ages 6-11 are $5 with kids 5 and under admitted free.
ONE FOR THE AGES
Last Saturday night’s Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Model feature was a race that you had to see to believe. Some called the 30 lap event “the best Late Model feature in 20 years.” When the dust settled, Alex Papini returned to victory lane. The win was Papini’s fourth in five starts this season and capped a whirlwind night for the driver from Machesney Park. After setting fast time, Papini fought brake issues right up until feature time. When the race began, Papini surged from his tenth place starting spot to rip the lead away from Mike Beyer after laps of hard racing featuring Papini, Beyer and Jake Gille. Soon after Papini disposed of Beyer on lap 27, Steve Rubeck quickly moved past Gille and Beyer and tried to steal the win from Papini, falling just short. Rubeck has been close to victory, will this Saturday be his night? Can Papini continue to run past his foes? Or will defending champ Jerry Gille return to victory lane? We’ll find all the answers under the “Saturday Night Lights…”
CLOSE-QUARTERS SPORTSMAN EXCITEMENT RETURNS THIS WEEK
After a week away from the track, the hard charging Bargain Hunter Sportsman return as part of Gilley’s Cool 5 action. This season has been as competitive as ever, and with the Gilley’s bonus bucks on the line, the competition is sure to be red hot. Opening night feature winner Brett McCoy holds a nine-point advantage over Johnny Robinson II is the season long point standings. Robinson has lots of competition very close behind though, with three drivers trailing him by only four points total. Defending track champion Doug Bennett is looking to return to victory lane this week and rebound from a rough outing two weeks ago, which dropped him to sixth in the season long standings.
