The Great Northern Sportsman Series will make its first of two trips to the Rockford Speedway this Wednesday night, July 17 as part of Encompass Gas’ ‘Wild Wednesday!’ The Series, in its first year, is a showcase of the best Sportsman drivers in the region. And if the expected entry list is any indication, this show is shaping up to a "can't miss" midweek affair!
De Forest, Wisconsin driver Jim Tate Jr rolls into Rockford with the Great Northern Sportsman Series (GNSS) point lead. Tate, also the current point leader at Jefferson Speedway, was the winner of the Series' first-ever race back in June at Veteran's Raceway Park in Tomah, Wisconsin. Tate has tasted victory this year at Rockford Speedway too, picking off the win on July 4th in the Bargain Hunter Sportsman 25 lap feature.
Slinger Speedway points leader Kyle Chwala will be racing with the GNSS at Rockford on Wednesday night. Chwala, a three-time feature winner at Slinger this season, will be joined by his teammate, fellow three-time Slinger feature winner Kody Hubred. Past Jefferson Speedway champion Jason Thoma, along with Jefferson regular Seth Lootans will also be in attendance. Multi-time Mid American Stock Car Series champion Bill Prietzel plans to test the high banks Wednesday night, as does Brillion, Wisconsin driver "Rockin" Randy Rahn.
There will be a heavy local presence on Wednesday night, as several of the Rockford regulars will look to defend their home turf. Two-time track champion Doug Bennett will be in action Wednesday night, looking for his fourth Sportsman feature win in his last five races. Bennett will be joined by six-time track champion Scott Lawver and two-time track champion Darrell Garman in the star studded field. Last year's Sportsman Rookie of the Year Johnny Robinson II is expected to race on Wednesday night, as is Kyle Lapier. Lapier, the 2010 American Short Tracker track champion at Rockford, has won one Sportsman feature this year to go with his three Short Tracker victories in 2013.
The Great Northern Sportsman Series will run a complete show, including time trials, preliminaries and a 40 lap feature event. Along with the Sportsman, a full 'Wild Wednesday' is planned. The midweek card will feature the Roadrunner Super Summer Series, Bandits, Figure 8, MisFits, Winged Women on Wheels and Super Cups and One-On-One Spectacular Drags, a staple of Wild Wednesdays. Adult admission on 'Wild Wednesday' is just $9 and 'Wild Wednesdays' are also 'Dollar Beer Nights' in the Miller Lite Pavilion.
Pits gates will open Wednesday at 4 pm, with practice for the Great Northern Sportsman Series beginning at 4:45 pm. Practice for 'Wild Wednesday' divisions will begin at 5:25 pm, with Qualifying starting at 5:55 pm. The green flag will fly on this busy Wednesday night at 7:07 pm.
