Officials at Rockford Speedway have released entry forms and competition guides for this year’s 48th Annual National Short Track Championships. The traditional year-end gathering of racers and race fans alike takes place Friday September 27th through Sunday September 29th at the sixty-six year old facility in Northern Illinois. This season’s edition of NSTC will feature 14 different divisions vying for glory on the high banks.
The high-powered Super Late Models once again return as the main attraction of NSTC, taking part in both Saturday and Sunday of “One Great Racing Weekend.” Saturday afternoon the Super Late Models will qualify, with each car running preliminary races on Saturday night. Sunday afternoon features Last Chance racing and the 200 lap main event. This season’s Super Late Model program at NSTC again features the “Racer’s Economic Stimulus Package,” a $600 value that is available to the first 40 drivers who file entries for the Super Late Model event.
Sunday also includes the Mid-American Stock Car Series, a staple of the final day of NSTC for over 15 years. The Mid-Am drivers will compete in a 75 lap feature on Sunday afternoon. Rockford Speedway’s Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Model division is also on the Sunday card, taking part in the Gerber Collision and Glass Ultimate Challenge (20 laps) and the very popular One-On-One Showdown Match Races.
Again this year, “The Best Weekly Warriors in the Country” are featured on NSTC weekend. The Big 8 Late Models presented by Gandrud Chevrolet are the main attraction on ‘Short Track Saturday Night,’ Saturday September 28th. The Big 8’s best will run a 108 lap feature, their most grueling race of the year, at NSTC. The busy Saturday night schedule includes the Great Northern Sportsman Series, in their first season, competing in a 50 lap feature event. The open-wheeled Illini Racing Series Midgets are back on the Saturday night card, running a 50 lap feature. The Hobby Stox (30 laps) and Illinois Vintage Series (20 laps) will also run Saturday night NSTC features.
NSTC’s opening night on Friday September 27th features the Championship Round of the Gilley’s Cool 5. Competing divisions include the Weekly Warrior Late Models, All American Sportsman, American Short Trackers and Roadrunners. The Late Models will run a 48 lap feature event, with the Sportsman, Short Trackers and Roadrunners running separate 40 lap feature races. Also included on Friday night is the Hornet vs. Bandit Challenge (25 laps) and the Season Championship Race for the ‘Wild & Crazy’ Figure 8 racers (15 laps).
