Champions will be crowned while the plot will thicken within other points battles during the 48th Annual National Short Track Championships at Rockford Speedway Friday, Saturday and Sunday September 27-29.
Friday night includes the Championship Round of the Gilley's Cool 5, with champions being crowned in the season-long five race challenge. Late Models, Sportsman, American Short Trackers and Roadrunners will all jockey for point position and battle for 'bonus bucks' on the opening night of the three-day racing event. Late Model racers will contest a 48 lap feature, with a $900 prize awaiting the winner. The Sportsman, American Short Trackers and Roadrunners will all take part in 40 lap championship features, with the Sportsman and Short Tracker winners pocketing $700 for first place, while the Roadrunners run for a $350 top prize.
Saturday night, the Big 8 Late Model Series presented by Gandrud Chevrolet will again be the featured attraction of 'Short Track Saturday Night,' contesting a grueling and drama-filled 108 lap feature event. Former Spring Classic winners Casey Johnson and Dale Nottestad currently sit atop the Big 8 standings, with only 19 points separating them heading into this weekend's event in Elko, Minnesota. Local favorites Austin Nason, Tim Sargent and "Rocketman" Dan Lensing also sit in the top six in Big 8 points, while "Driver X" Jon Reynolds Jr looks to collect his fourth win in the 108 lapper in six years.
The Great Northern Sportsman Series (GNSS) makes their debut on Saturday night of the National Short Track Championships this year. The series features many of the same drivers who have competed in the rugged 'Area Sportsman' class in recent years at "One Great Racing Weekend." The Rockford GNSS date is the penultimate race in their 2013 season, with their first ever series champion being crowned the following week at Oktoberfest Race Weekend in West Salem, WI. The Illini Racing Series Midgets will also crown their champion at Rockford Speedway for the third straight year, contesting a 50 lap main event. Last year, champion Patrick Bruns used a bold last-lap move to steal victory from Sean Murphy.
Sunday once again includes the Mid American Stock Car Series, as they contest a 75 lap feature during "Championship Sunday." The Mid American cars, like the GNSS, will crown their champion the following week at Oktoberfest. However, numerous times throughout the years, the 75 laps at Rockford have separated contenders from pretenders in the Mid-American title chase.
