Schmidt, Schneider, Schinderling, Jr, Hillary, Genore, & Ciano, Jr Haul to Victory Lane

By Steve Reeves – Seven drivers guided their race rigs to victory lane at Rockford Speedway on Wild Wednesday Trucker Night, August 2, 2017. It was Nick Schmidt delivering in the Bandits, Stephen Hillary securing the Original Sixers load, Destiny Genore dispatching the Winged Women on Wheels field, and Terry Ciano, Jr. at the top of the Hornet convoy. Nick Schneider docked the first Figure 8 event of the night, while Rich Schinderling, Jr hooked up for the second. Tim Brucchi logged the books as the survivor in another thrilling Spectacular Drags.

Schmidt appeared unaffected by new Bandit competition rules, starting seventh on the field and used the lowest lanes of pavement on the high-banked quarter mile, to claim the modified 4-cylinder win. Jeff Parisot led the opening lap, but Duane Lounsbury and Nicole Mueller moved up from the second row to battle up front. Point leader Kelsey Dobbs and Schmidt soon joined the intense pack, dueling for the top spots. Schmidt made three-wide moves through-out, and completed the official race-winning pass under Lounsbury late. Dobbs and Dan Schmeissing of Manhattan, IL; placed second and third.

It was Double Figure-8s for the fan favorite “criss-crossing” class. Top ranking series drivers Nick Schneider, Rich Schinderling, Jr and Josh Thiering were scored first, second, third in the opening event. Schinderling, Jr, Jon Reynolds, Jr (winner of the last Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Model 30-lapper), and Schneider completed the podium in the encore event; with the latter two both surviving separate spin-outs before reaching the checkered flag!

Stephen Hillary swept the Original Sixers evening. After claiming the heat race, Hillary was ahead of opening lap melees to drive away for the the stock 6-cylinder feature victory. Division leader Gary Ballard was runner-up, and Haley Roberts held on for third place.

Destiny Genore moved up from the very last spot on the starting grid, to strengthen her position at the top of the Winged Women on Wheels field. 14-year old Lilly Allen looked strong early, pacing the winged compact racers from the pole. Genore was able to continue her season long charge at the drop of the green though and took command of the race after lap one. Amanda Bielefeldt, Nicole Mueller, and Ashley Matts all made challenges during the race, but Genore held on for the win. Mueller followed her across the line and Matts was a strong second runner-up.

Terry Ciano, Jr lined up from outside the front row for the “standing start” of the Hornet division. He never looked back on the stock 4-cylinder field, but all eyes were on Erik Pearson from the last row. Pearson shot by no less than five other drivers in the first laps, to draft Ciano to the finish. Shannon Helmer trailed in third.

The action packed evening of racing served as the penultimate round for many of the divisions in their 2017 points chases. This very next Wednesday, August 9th, is Wild Wednesday Championship Night on the high banked quarter mile oval. Titles are still up for grabs in every division.

The World Famous Figure 8 Trailer Race, presented by Kar Korner, is first set to hit the track tomorrow, Saturday August 5th. Cars, trucks and vans pulling boats, campers and trailers of all sorts, compete until ‘the last trailer trails!’ Season long point battles and intense NASCAR action continues on the oval, with the Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models, Bargain Hunter Sportsman, Miller Lite American Short Trackers and Kickstart Roadrunners on the racing card. The Roadrunner Challenge ‘Hare & the Hound Race’ is also set to entertain. Grandstands open at 5 PM, but ‘tailgating’ before the event in the parking lot is encouraged. The Co-Lin Metals Fabricating Fast Dashes are set to go green at 7:07 PM. Advance tickets are STILL available at this time. See rockfordspeedway.tix.com or call 815-633-1500, through Saturday morning. The Rockford Speedway Main Office is open today and tomorrow through midday.
