There was no doubt, the first Wild Wednesday of 2014 at Rockford Speedway belonged to Dennis Smith Jr.

The South Beloit resident started the night off right by setting the Wednesday night Roadrunner track record during qualifying. Then later in the evening, Smith was not only victorious in the 25 lap Roadrunner Super Summer Series feature, he also capped the night off by taking the win in the ‘wild n crazy’ Figure 8 finale.

The Roadrunner Super Summer Series feature ran at a very brisk pace, with young Robby Robinson leading the way for most of the race. Smith, who started from eleventh position, slowly picked his way towards the front of the field. By lap 18, Smith found himself on the bumper of Robinson’s leading vehicle. The two raced side-by-side for several laps before Smith finally slipped to the front for good with under five laps to go.

Following Smith and Robinson across the line in third was Kyle McQuality, the 2013 Roadrunner Super Summer Series Champion. Adam Cartwright collected fourth, with Alex Chabucos rounding out the top five.

In the Figure 8 feature event, Smith moved past Joey Thomas for the lead on lap two and never looked back. Cartwright was second, with Thomas third.

It was a interesting night for the Bandit division. Seventeen of the four cylinder cars checked into the pits Wednesday night, however only eleven cars took the green flag for the division’s main event. When the smoke cleared on the 20 lap main, Chris Jones was the first across the line. Despite this fact, Jones’ vehicle did not pass post race technical inspection and was disqualified, handing the victory to Justin Pearson. Brian Cook was awarded second spot while Jason Dull was credited with third.

Cassidy Frisch has started the year two-for-two in the Racer Girl Winged Women on Wheel division, after notching another win Wednesday night. Frisch made her way through a mad scramble early in the race and inherited the lead by lap four of the 12 lap race. Chandale Swartwout came home in second, with Chelsea Loos rounding out the top three.

Old faces returned to victory lane in the MisFit divisions, as defending champions Vern Brown (Winged) and Dwight Dunlap (Fendered) both found their way back to victory lane Wednesday evening.

Freeport’s Jaden Fryer also picked up where he left off last season, sweeping the night away in the Wednesday Night Super Cup Series presented by Hooker Harness.
